I want to do Journalism, though didn't recieve the points. I might have a PLC course, and that's an alternitive entry to Journalism in DCU. According to Qualifax, to be qualify for Journalism in DCU via FETAC course you must meet the following requirements:

    General Entry Requirements
Full FETAC Level 5 Certification must be achieved in one single sitting.
    5 Distinctions must be achieved.*
*A Distinction will be a grade of 80% or more in one module.

    Course Entry Requirements
Additional course requirements are indicated below. This requires the attainment of performance in specifically named FETAC Level 5 Awards.

Applicants are ranked based on their performance in the 8 modules that make up their award. The score is calculated based on the grade they get in the module and the credit value of the module according to the following table:

    Points Awarded:
    Credit: Points Awarded 0.5, 1
    Distinction: Points Awarded 1.5, 3
    Merit: Points Awarded 1, 2
    Pass: Points Awarded 0.5, 1

The total score for all modules in the award is calculated from the above table and multiplied by a factor of 15.

    FETAC LEVEL 5

    EPJXX Print Journalism
    Distinctions in 5 Modules including:

    G20001 Communications
E20008 Media Analysis or G20031 Social Studies
    E20078 Writing for Journalism
    and 2 from the following:

    E20011 Photography
    E20076 Research Skills for Journalism
    E20077 Technical Skills for Journalism

EXPJXX is the course I'd take BTW. My question is, how difficult is it to meet those requirements? I really have no idea!

If you are prepared to put in the work it is quite possible to get distinctions in FETAC. Not saying its easy, but you are studying a subject you are interested in and it really is down to effort and application. Really to be able to cope with journalism at third level you would have to be at the required stage, so they are not being 'difficult' just indicating the level you will have to be able to study at.

You might even find that your Fetac skills are more relevant to your course than LC results, and that you will already have quite a lot of first year covered.

To be honest if you want to be a Journalist you should really consider having a good undergrad degree and then a postgrad or even FE/PLC qualification in the mechanics of journalist. Most journalists have degrees in History or Politics or English or even Science.

However if you do decide to use the PLC route do remember that the 5 distinctions are the basic requirements - most students applying via this route will be presenting with 8 distinctions.

I'll be honest with you.. It's not hard if you really want it.. I'm heading down the radio road through a PLC.. didn't get my offer :(
So i'm gonna completely go all out like.. No holds barred and hopefully I'll get what I need.
