Took some pics of Jupiter tonight with my Neximage cam. I'm still getting used to the settings on the software to correct light/colour etc.. Will need someone to help me track it next time so I can spend more time on image correction.

    Oh well, it's a start :)

    Well done!

Was looking at Jupiter myself last night and seeing conditions were less than ideal (I seemed to be seeing lots of turbulence at higher magnifications).

dlofnep, great pictures. I didn't realise such detailed pictures could be taken with amateur equipment. Have you taken any pictures of the moon? If so, can you post one:)

I did, but only with my cameraphone. I haven't taken any proper pics of the moon yet.

    Here's another pic of jupiter.

Here's a pic of the moon, but it was only with my camera phone so it's not great. I'll take a proper pic tomorrow night if it's not overcast.

    Me too!

@OP: I'm just wondering what Neximage does. I googled and it looks like a camera you attach to your laptop? How are you taking this wonderful pics? :)

The neximage is a glorified webcam, with a CCD image-sensor chip. The cam attaches into your scope, instead of your eye-piece and the other end connects to your laptop. One it's connected, you record X amount of footage of the object - Let's say, 30 seconds. Before I even capture the footage, I have to play with the settings in my capture software (AMCap) so that it brings out as much detail as possible in the object (in this case Jupiter).

Once I have the capture device calibrated for Jupiter, I capture about 30 seconds footage. That footage is then important into a program called registax. What registax does, is it allows you to stack the best frames from the video capture, and correct the image so that it's much sharper and visually better than the video image. I then export the image.

It sounds complicated, but it really isn't. You can do it all in about 5 - 10 minutes.

Thanks. That is a pretty clear explanation. I'll look into it. I'd love to have some kind of record for my stargazing and these are pure beautiful pics!

I've only started taking pics myself. That was my first attempt last night, but if I can help you with anything, let me know!

WTF?! What kind of phone do you have...? That's amazing.

It was just a camera phone :) I just aligned it with the eye-piece and took a snap. I'll take a proper pic of the moon tonight :)

hi all, am new here at posting so here it goes:-)

i optained some images of jupiter and IO lastnight (early hours of today should say) with my celestron 9.25 SCT @f/20, DMK.21AU04.AS with an IR planetary Pro 742 filter. 30fps. 2500 frames stacked and processed in registax5. this image was captured at 25082010 04.05am BST. the IR pro filter helps in keeping the image steady! its an excellent item to have for our climate when imaging! great to see all the images of jupiter here! am hoping to try colouring imaging at some point but for now i think everything is clear enough in black and white:-)

lets hope for more clear skies for this autumn!!!

clear skies from the west of the shannon!
    james.

Took this last night. Good viewing conditions. Wish I had of taken the scope away from the city to escape the light pollution.

    Yep,

Conditions were pretty good last night (in my VERY limited experience).

Got to see the Red Sport for the first time. Visual views were lovely :)

Still processing, but here's a shot with Io transiting at about 9.30pm last night ->

    Jupiter_20100917_2129_17%20RGB%20WAV%20Med.jpg

Io's shadow is elongated so there a lot of work to do with the stacking :o

    As a bonus....saw Uranus too.

Couldn't see it with the webcam though.

Another planet seen with my own eyes :D

    Peter

Brilliant pics from everyone, I really didn't think this was possible either with amateur equipment, well done.

You seem to get so much more detail :( I'm going to have to crack out the barlow next time.
