Having booked a standard twin(and paid a 800 euro deposit) some time ago under the allusion that the 2900 fee was to be payed in two separate lump sums-I was rather shocked to receive an email today informing me(with no prior warning) that the full 2900 is now due no later than Thursday

I along with my parents are in a state of shock-simply we do not have the money to meet such a ludicrous request at short notice

I just checked back on my emails and looks like thats the same every year...my first payment was paid by the 23rd of August. However this was the 1st of 2 lump sums so maybe email them and tell them that you can only afford to pay half now and half later and this is what you thought the procedure was...if you say you're waiting on your grant they should know that they aren't in til September.

When I first looked the Corrib Village up I'm sure that it mentioned two separate payments(this was before Christmas) I've been in touch with friends and they also remember this

    Thats outrageous!
I'm pretty sure it said 2 payments when I was looking for accommodation a few months back!

It DEFO said 2 payments when I was looking for accommodation a few months back!

Thank you! It was definitely two payments I have at least 5 friends who are in utter shock over this having paid deposits under the assumption of two separate payments

it is usually the case with student accommodation to pay in 2 moietys. gort and cuirt have that system (not sure about dunaras). send an email back to them and complain, saying that you understood that it was to paid in 2 instalments. maybe try and look for a google cache page to back it up.

Here's a link to an info page which I think they sent out last year.

    http://www.corribvillage.com/pdf/Atalia_Application_Pack_2009-2010.pdf

    From Page 6 of 14:
When is the 2nd Moiety Payable?
2nd Moiety is payable by 15th December 2008
Keys need to re-activated on receipt of 2nd Moiety

Page 7 goes through each room types cost and divides them into TWO moietys!

Looks like they changed it this year.. The bastards!

I'd say it could be an unfortunate mistake tbh. It says '1st Moiety' so I'm guessing they expect another in the future and that the '€2900' is an error. Send them an email about it, they're usually swift in replying back.

i doubt it's a mistake when the website states nothing about paying a 2nd moiety

Does it not cost €5000 for a year???

Yeah you're right, just had a look through the FAQ too:
    # How can I pay my deposit & Moiety?
Your deposit & moiety payment can be made by cheque, bank draft, credit card or Bank Transfer

As ciano pointed out last year's FAQ mentioned the 2nd Moiety but it's not there this year... so yeah the OP made the mistake in assuming there were to be two payments. :(

No, when I researched student accom in Galway I checked the Corrib Village website thoroughly and there was a clear mention of two moieties-this was around Dec/Jan-I have friends who booked under the assumption(having seen this on the website back then) of two payments-they have now been told that one single payment is due no later than Thursday

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,109 ✭✭✭QueenOfLeon

Since the bit you quoted about the moieties is referring to 2008, theres no proof really that they told you it was 2 moieties for 2010/2011 :( I think your best bet is just to try and sort it out that you can pay 2 seperate installments, I'm pretty sure that others are in the same position as you.

Was that in the 'rates' section? They had 'Rates for Academic Year 2009/2010' on the page, although incoming students weren't to know it was gonna change. It's an infuriating situation, hopefully you can explain your predicament and get to pay it in installments.

Corrib Village love their money so they'll probably sort something out.

just rang them there if it not all in by thusday you lose your depoist this is such **** im gonna be left without a house and 800euro should get everyone to call and complain

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

They are probably trying to get the most money possible out of potential drop outs (no offence to any future first years here) by charging the whole amount and not refunding it after they drop out. NUIG are pursuing a number of 'money saving'/cash grabbing policies and it is all coming from the students rather than any other source. kick up a stink about it, make complaints in writing if necessary and if you have previous documents to show that the cost should have been broken into two payments tell them about this. It should not be too hard to force a climb down since they've clearly changed the policy with minimum time given and no apologies to the incoming students. If they're not budging after all that perhaps you or your parents could talk to a solicitor if you know one.

you may be able to cancel your place - http://www.corribvillage.com/student/faqs.html#6 - if you write to them but it must sent within 3 days of the offers.
this states you'll €100 of your deposit though, and it's if you don't get a place at NUIG. do corrib village have access to whether you're coming to NUIG or not? you could try weaseling out of it if you don't want to go with corrib village after all.

Whether or not they have access to if you were offered your place (I doubt it though, they're not connected to the uni) they still won't know if you deferred it or something like that. It's completely unfair to do that to ye though, if there was NOWHERE on the site that said the payment was due in 1 lump sum. Also the whole "first moiety" thing is quite misleading as that is what we were charged in August and then the "second moiety" was the remainder in December.

Maybe get in touch with the NUIG accommodation office? They don't run Corrib but they might be able to help you out. The address on the site is teresa.kelly@nuigalway.ie or phone number 091 49276.

that's really unfair for them to change in suddenly!

I stayed there last year and it was paid in two sums.

God those guys really are ****!!!

I'd get out of there while you still can tbh if they give you any hassle about payments

I would advice contacting the student union for some advice. The welfare officer would be the right person to email i would think

No text speak Cathal please, its against the rules on boards. itsokay if you don't want to pay the full rent price up front kick up a fuss, say you can't pay it all in one go, need the grant, etc, and try and make them negotiate a more suitable option.

I'm eager to find out if amongst all of ye, some-one manages to come up with some form of a document or confirmation or something in print about the 2 Installments ..... Surely one of ye would have it ....

    Hey guys,

I lived there last year and the are an absolute joke, i payed in two lump sums and they were not hesitant in asking for it. But by the time summer came around and it was time to get our deposits back it took them well over a month and a half. Such a joke! I would get on to the welfare officer in the student union, and ring up and just kick up a fuss.

I'd just like to point out that the word "moiety" means "half" or "part of", so they're clearly chancing their arm by claiming they meant it to be one payment.
