CIE Property Development: Probably....

......the worst property developer of all time.

Ive been reviewing my notes of late and it has come to my attention that CIE have failed in the area of property development. Looking back over the last 7 years (4 of which were in boom times) CIE made many announcements to redevelop many station sites in a bid to improve transport facilities by way of earning money from adjacent land. Tara Street entered development hell because the original plan envisaged closing the station for 18 months. Add to this ambitious plans for Galway, Limerick, Athlone and even more work at Connoly. None of it has happened. Even Spencer Dock has now stalled after it compromised the development of rail infrastructure in the city.

Were opportunities lost and abused in all this?

Cork was arguably among the worst of these, where IE's developer partner tried to run roughshod over Cork City Council's planners and came off worst.
