GP to consultant - how does the system work?

    Hello all

I grew up in Ireland and lived here till I was 22. However, I mainly dealt with my GP and had little experience of consultants. I then moved to the UK.

Now, I am back home and my GP referred me to a consultant for a long standing medical issue. I am very happy with my GP's care of one of my illnesses; but she said she felt ill equipped to deal with another condition I have. So, she sent me to a consultant. I am now wondering how the system works with him.

Does he write to my GP and tell her what to do? I am due to see him in four months for more tests. He has also made some recommendations for my care; one of which is really behind the times, highly conservative and will result in me getting very ill. I tried to explain to him why I do not want to make such a move, but he was dismissive and it was like banging my head against a wall.

So, I am now wondering is my GP legally bound to follow his recommendations. Or does he even write to her? How does the system work?

Thank you very much for your help.

he will write to your gp with his findings and recommendations

there is no legal obligation on your gp to follow those recommendations, and if you wish you can refuse a particular course of action.

if you are very dissatisfied, ask for a second opinion.

Thanks very much for your help. Fingers crossed my GP will respect my informed opinion (via medical journals, conferences, speaking directly to doctors in the field and my YEARS of reading) over this consultant who wants to take the route that will leave me ill again and pretty much shows how little reading he has done on this subject! She HAS seen me when I was very ill and following the protocol that he would want though; so maybe that will work in my favour.
