My service book show that the timing belt should be changed after 100,000km.

    It's a petrol engine.

I know timing belts are important to change for diesels but for petrol engines as well?

Yes. It's a lot more work to repair the damage done should it snap.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Never knew about changing the belts on a petrol engine.

    It's 1.6 Hyundai Coupe petrol.

Anyone have an idea of the cost?

    Thanks again.

Be aware timing belts also have a time ( :) ) resricition on them too. In most cases it's the recommended mileage or 5 years, whichever comes first. Rubber deteriorates over time.

lmao not gonna be hard on you but its vitally crucial...if the timing belt gets old and snaps the valve/piston timing goes out of sync ending up damaging pistons and valves which can cost you alot to fix

i believe the hyundai 1.6 is a interference engine, so if the belt snaps you could need a engine rebuild. so you better off getting it sorted.

Timing belts are important to change on all engines,

Except for the engines that don't have timing belt(many engines at the moment), and the one's that are not interferential (pistons can't go that high to touch unclosed valves).

    Is this thread for real?

Of course the timing belt is important, it's there for a good reason, much like the wheels, brakes and doors.

I wouldn't rate that site as great to be honest, how can a price be given for the likes of a timing belt when there are all these ifs and buts ?

"The following work will be carried out on your vehicle:
Remove and install Timing Belt and Water Pump (where necessary) all appropriate Tensioner Pulleys and Belts associated with it. Each Timing Belt Kit includes; Timing Belt, associated Belts (where necessary), Water Pump (where necessary) and Tensioner pulleys (where necessary)."

You beat me to it. ;)

"If the engine is broken it'll cost thousands to fix it; if it isn't, it won't". Cool or wha'?
