Graduation or Holiday?

I am stuck in quite the predicament at the moment, let me explain, I have just finished college and hoping to apply for a h dip for secondary school teaching before december of this year and if accepted I will be able to continue my studies next september (that will be a second graduation).

Now here is my problem, I had worked really hard in my final year to get my 1.1 with the promise of going away for the summer but that didnt work out so I had to work for the summer, I had 2 days after my last exam of college to relax before I started into work, so my parents promised me that Id be able to travel in October but now that I have found out the date of my graduation which is in october means that I have a decision to make. My parents now dont want me to travel and instead hang around for the whole month of October for just one afternoon of photos. My plan was to go to Egypt with my girlfriend for a few weeks and then try and get sub teaching when I come home.

So i need help, do I hang around for the graduation after working so hard with the promise of going away or do I go away to Egypt and miss my graduation which will ultimately disappoint my parents?

    Have you booked the holiday?
Is there any way you can work around it and do both?

If you're going to have a second graduation next year anyway, i'd go on the holiday.

EDIT: I presume you will still graduate whether you're there or not?
Not up to speed on these things!

Go on your holidays, tell your parents they can look forward to your second graduation instead.

Go travelling, if you're doing another course you'll have another chance to sit through a boring ceremony anyway.

I didn't go to my degree graduation, but was dragged to the masters one, and it was a boring and pointless experience. You get your sheet of paper either way. Go have fun.

What college where you in?I had the same issue when I graduated but I just deferred the graduation to a later ceremony until I was back in the country. It just means you won’t be graduating with your class. They had no problem with it whatsoever. You get to travel and your folks get their day out.

Did you defer your graduation till the following year? I was in DCU, what college did you go to?

Go travelling. I didn't go to my graduation. As far as I was concerned, as soon as I got my exam results I was graduated.

I was in Trinity and was meant to graduate in October but I was in Zambia at the time so I just told them I was off doing charity work and asked could I graduate when I got back instead. No problem at all and came back and graduated in December. You've nothing to lose by asking.

If it is important to your parents I think you should do the graduation. The h.dip graduation is a load of crap it isn't made as a big deal at all (at least the one in Trinity isn't). If you are only going to be subbing can you not go on holiday another month? Perhaps in December/Jan when teh schools will be off anyway?

I could but I would be going away by myself cause my girlfriend wont be free any other time, we've only been abroad as a couple once for a week in the 4 years we have been together, and the reason for that is because we have been trying to keep people happy like the situation I am in now again, typical really...

If your parents are disappointed in you because you want to goto Egypt instead of graduating.. after all college nd working all summer, get new parents.. Seriously.
And if you want to go to your graduation instead of Egypt, get your head checked. I look back at mine as one big 'meh..'.

As someone who didnt go to their graduation I would say definitely go to it. Ive regret not going big time.

And your parents would appreciate it lots im sure. Go and enjoy the day. It will mean more to you in years to come.

graduating is sh1t. You have to spend money renting out clothes so that you can look like a spastic whilst sitting there listening to the president of the university trying to pimp his college going on about how much it has expanded in the last year.
Your parents just want that graduation photo on the wall, screw them.

If its your first ever graduation then graduate. Get the gown, photos, go for dinner. It will be a very proud moment for your parents and family. You can travel anytime.

In what ways have you regretted it? You put on a dress over your other clothes and collect a piece of paper from a man who doesn't know your name, while sitting in a room full of people doing the same thing and getting hot and sweaty cause the room probably isn't air conditioned. Then you will probably have to sit through the phd graduates who all have terrible topics that you aren't interested in and wear floppy hats for some unknown reason.
Then you have pictures taken for a while. Then if you're lucky you go for a drink with people you've been drinking with for about 3 years before and will probably drink with again.

OP go on holiday, you have a second grad in the works with your h.dip anyways so you have a chance to do it again.

If your parents put you through college, you owe it to them to go to your graduation. It's not just one afternoon of photos - it's a really proud, memorable moment for your parents. Yes, it's boring as hell, and kinda pointless - but ya owe it to them.

If they didn't put you through college, then it's your own decision.

...you will probably have to sit through the phd graduates who all have terrible topics ...

At my last graduation there was a cool sounding PhD on poltergeists. :p

    go on holidays
ultimately what you worked hard for is the degree, not the graduation!
you worked for it not your parents, go on your holidays and enjoy yourself
and as you said you'll have a second graduation next year

I regret it because i realise now that it would have been a really good way to thank my parents for all that they have done for me. I know it would have been a very proud moment for them. Im sure they were proud of me getting my degree anyway but its a nice day out for them.

And thats worth an hour or two getting hot in a sweaty room

    Just my opinion
