last fox shot with my old 22 mag back in april, and first fox with new rem 223 last night. full moon last night so he could see the jeep a mile off. called him for 10 mins and no way was he taking any chances. we couldnt even tell if it was a fox and after 10 mins with no movement i thought it was a hare lookin back at me. so took off the red filter and turned the scope up it was as clear as day it was charly sittin up looking at us. i knew after all that he wasnt gona play ball. the shot was safe so i took it from the jeep window. he dropped like stone on the spot. paced him out over 200. thats a first for me:D clean head shot. a good rifle is nothing without a good scope. good start with the remmy:cool:

I love my Remington, I'm considering rechambering her, but it seems a shame as the barrel fluting is really eye catching

Even a Female Garda Sargent said it to me once when she was inspecting them!

Perhaps I have to bite the bullet "pardon the pun2 and buy another action to build a rifle on.

I'd like a 6XC or 6mmBR, I just can't find the reddies to go the full custom route, and as my Remmy VSSF II is very accurate as is it would be a shame to chop her IMHO.

The 6XC interests me, but I'm struggling to find a bullet drop chart in inches to compare it to a .223 drop chart in inches

What round are you looking to compare to in .223?Norma do a 105 gr berger head in 6XC .Run a 115gr DTAC ,b/c of .585 and m/v of 3050fps on your ballistic program .

Is there something wrong about doing this?

I believe so, to the best of my knowledge it's illegal to shoot from or off a motorised vehicle. I could be open to correction but I think that's the case.

Section 36 of the Wildlife Act, 1976 as amended by Section 44 of the Wildlife (Amendment) Act, 2000 says the following:
    1. Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act apart from this section but subject to, section 42, a person shall not hunt or disturb for the purpose of hunting—
      1. any protected wild animal by means of a mechanically-propelled vehicle, vessel or aircraft, whether it is being so propelled or is stationary,
      2. any protected wild bird by means of such a vehicle, vessel or aircraft while it is being so propelled.
The bits in red were removed in an amendment made in 2000

    Nope.

Whether the vehicle is on or off the road doesn't matter.

sorry about that your right just seen the STATIONARY bit, that means i see there no duck shooting even if boat is ancored in rushed, was in a tread the other day that was fine once you are stationary, think were nit picken here, but at least i know now, thanks. i have to correct myself i see in it is ok as long as the boat is not being propelled, so it is ok to shoot birds from a stationary boat, but not a wild animal from a car or jeep.

I get where you're coming from, I'll tell ya how I see it.

It's the fault of the law. It's both badly written and quite hard for the layman (myself included) to understand.

Life would be considerably easier if it were simply written in black and white so as to be clear and understood, rather than requiring a barrister to read it to a person!

A free booklet, or one available for a nominal fee, containing such clear information available with gun purchases or in gun shops would be of use.

That said, and though rare, I'd rather know where I stood and what options I have. There are a lot of people around my area, some home grown, some blown in and some on holiday who would be vehemently against shooting or hunting. It's great to be able to shut them up by having those aces up your sleeve.

"nit piken" as you call it could cost you your firearms licence/s and get you a criminal record if you get stopped by someone who knows what the law better than you

    Me too Kieran.

It's always nice to know what you are doing is legal or not.
And finding out for me is by asking questions, and questioning the answers too.

    OK. No hassle ;)

The law is a joke and as I said on another thread it is SO easy to get caught out

A lot of the antis know more about the legislation surrounding what what we do than we do. You are right to come here and ask and as Tac says to question. I have learned a lot here and learn more every day.

    Knowledge is good

That's both true and disconcerting. Also, some of them will try to catch a person out with a relevant and correct law, then add their own bits once the shooter is on the run in the conversation.

That's about the size of it Jim. Doesn't matter where the vehicle is, just that it is a vehicle and you're not supposed to shoot from it or even off it.

We've plenty of less than ideal/sensible laws unfortunately :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭tfox

Seems like your not allowed shoot from any vehicle.

Which is all news to me as have done it many many many times

Was brought up shooting rabbits sitting in the spare wheel on a landrover bonnet  some best memories of learning to shoot !!

We all learn something new everyday

    +1 on that!
most of the time your just using the jeep to rest the rifle on instead of the fence post beside it!
but the laws the law and its nice to kno where you stand.
always thought myself as a safe and legal shot. makes me think what else im doing wrong in the eyes of the law?
