Shrinking clothes in the wash/dryer?

I've got two pieces of clothing that I would like to shrink in the wash, but I'm afraid that I'll ruin them other wise. I have been told to wash them in a hot wash for half an hour and throw them in the dryer on a hot cycle. I want to get a few more opinions just in case I've gotten the wrong answer!

The first piece is a gorgeous dark purple oversized cardi. I got it in January but it looks too over sized even though it's size small! It says it's 100% acrylic?? What do I do with it?

The second piece is a beautiful cotton blazer that my mum bought me as a surprise (I love it, sometimes her tastes of what I would like are WAYYYY off the mark! But, she knew from the second she showed it to me that I loved it!) I adore it except it's a little baggy I would like to make it a little more fitted! :)

So what do I do? I would love to shrink them because I do love both pieces already but would like to make them a little bit smaller! I don't want to take a chance with the cardi and find a teeny weeny cardi of barbie doll proportions looking out at me!!!

I think the acrylic may just go a bit mishapen rather then shrink though I'm open to correction on that.
As for the blazer you'd be better off getting someone to alter it for you. €10 to put a couple of darts in the back to fit it will be much better then the hit&miss chance of shrinking it to size.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Yeah my school jumper was acrylic and I wrecked mine throwing it in the dryer. If anything, it was bigger.

I would have the jacket taken in, should not cost much. As for the cardi, I would not putit on a hot wash. A freind of mind look in the seams of a jumper that was to big and it worked fine. I had never of of it being done before but might be worth a go.
