Reference question

I need to provide three references for a job application I am filling out; including one from my current place of employment.

The choice of two of them is straightforward: My supervisor, and my manager from my previous job. However I am not sure who to provide for the third.

I have been in my current position for three years [since 2007]. Before that, I was in a job in my field for two years [since 2005]. However, for the year before that, I only worked in a few short-term contracts (about a week), and on personal projects. Before that period I worked for a year in in a non-professional role [2004-2005], but I took on work in that job that was relevant [Access SQL stuff].

So I'm not sure if I should use two references from either my current or previous positions, or to see if I can get in touch with someone from the work I did in 2004/2005. I was provided with a good reference for this before, but there might be difficulty contacting one of the appropriate people at this stage. I'm not sure if this is too long ago to be a good choice?

Come to think of it, the person who would be most appropriate to use as a second reference for my current position might be inappropriate: They might be applying for the same job.

    Hope this is clear. Thanks.
