Does anyone from here use these wedges. Played with a guy at the weekend and was amazed with the amount of spin he was getting with them.

Just wondering how they compare to the vokeys?

Been looking at getting a couple of these bad boys alright... just need to find the funds from somewhere... buskings looking like a possibility!

recently spoke to two very reputable pros and they are adament that these EPON wedges generate more spin than any wedge on the market, incl vokeys - which is what i have. In fact one told me to get rid of whatever im using and just get these now. Japanese made as far as i know. havent seen evidence of this spin in the flesh but have no reason to doubt what ive been told.

a local pro shop has them on display... kills me knowing theyre there and yet cant be mine... bloody mortgage.

Don't know where you are from but Derek McGrath stocks them. He is based in the Celbridge driving range.

Any idea what price they're going for in Cellbridge?

Think they are close to the €150.

I'm sure you can do a deal on them. Never seen a ball spin like i did with these clubs. I'm very tempted to purchase myself.

are they legal in the long term?
if the pros cant use them i wouldn't feel right using them

Not sure i'd want my wedges to spin any more than a Vokey. I don't really see the need.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

    agreed
sometimes i find the vokey can even be too hot to handle
i suppose practice = consistency in response = lower scores

a SW by ram can be equally effective if the player knows what hes doing and has embraced the club truly

Just to be clear here... are we talking about letting someone watch me bathe???

Same here. Drop & stop is great but actual backspin is annoying as I never allow for it (mostly because id only get it 2/3 wedges out of 10) Vokeys are perfect & at 90e a pop great value.

It might be a different story on really hard fast greens. Would you need more spin to hold them?

    Why would you pay that??
When Vokeys, Clevelands, Callaway and Ping's wedges all are costing less than €100!

Dose anyone else think we are getting ripped off with wedges pay 90 for them they only last about 2 seasons where your other irons last 8/9 years and cost 500 for 9 clubs 55 quid each.

Its 610 sterling (750 euro) for Titleist 710 mb irons (8 irons). Thats pretty much the same p/iron as a Titleist vokey wedge. You can buy wedges for 50e. Those md golf seve wedges are that price & look great. They've the same milled face as the vokeys, supposed to be great for spin (golf monthly review).

not unusual for ppl to change their wedges each year, depending on how much theyre playing.

thats not down to wear and tear tho is it?
can somebody actually play that much golf in 12 months?

i realise some clowns upgrade their clubs every year alright but that's as a means to compensate for other inadequacies in life

    yes & yes.
the grooves wear out on wedges, particularly if youre doing a lot of practicing.

Go for the Cleveland CG15's with Zip grooves, they are available for approx €85 and they will spin the ball to your hearts content. €150 for a wedge is pretty silly unless you are making a living from the game. All you need is a drop and stop wedge unless you are talented enough to control your distance and spin which tends to be a preserve of better pros.

    what wedge does phil use?
dont tell me its one of those japanese clubs with callaway branding stamped on?

Can anyone recommend a decent 'drop and stop' wedge, if I could do this I'd be happy???

Was looking at Vokeys at the weekend and can;t figure out what one would suit, I don't really know what the different degress on them would mean for me!

I can get the ball up and on to the green in the general area I want but usually it will bounce or run off the green. So looking for something that will help me kill the ball on the green.

If your ball is running off the green then I would first look at the golf ball that you are using. If it is a hardish ball then you still won't get the desired "drop and stop" action from a premium wedge. If you couple any of the better wedges already mentioned Cleveland CG15, Vokeys, Callaway X-series etc. with a ProV1, Z-Star, i-Tour or similar then you should get the added control that you are after.

    go with a 60 degrees i'd say
this is typical for a player who can use a PW / SW satisfactorily
bounce IMO should prob be 7 or whatever the midpoint is
again the best approach is to take a few out in the range and see what works best for you

hauld on... anyone who pays 150 for a wedge is clearly golf insane.... if you cant haggle the man down closer to 100 then its time to head towards the door.
however, theres plenty fellas out there who've shelled out double that for a new driver in mcguirks and the like...or are all those drivers they have there for circa €300 on display just for the craic? Likewise with putters if not moreso.. ie the new odyssey 2ball is 150 on mcguirks.com. Scotty camerons are roughly 200 and in most cases more.

Or maybe the wedge isnt as important a club as a driver or a putter? b*ll*x.

i reckon if a lad wants to pay inexcess of €100 for the wedge he feels he needs when those around him are handing over ridiculous money for drivers then so fooking what

Well it's good to see that all those millions Titleist, Callaway and the like spend on marketing is paying off.:D 5 to 10 years ago people were paying silly money for drivers, nowadays, it's wedges.
I got Nicklaus wedge for ~30 euro recently, and surprise, surprise it works just fine. If you must have one with a milled face, get a Fazer, just like the Cleveland but a third of the price.
