Combining my love of both - I came up with these comparisons.

Steve Austin - Manchester United: Hottest thing from the mid to late 90s. Loved and loathed in equal measure - but universally respected in the long run. Against the world mentality worked wonders most of the time
The Rock - Arsenal Flashy and very successful. Accused by some of often going for style over substance. Still, rarely a dull moment when around.
John Cena - Chelsea Currently on top, but not met with universal approval. This hard feeling might wane over time. Preferential to the ’bling’ lifestyle.
Randy Orton -Inter Milan Dominant right now, and eventually became a master at exploiting others weaknesses.
Bret Hart - Liverpool Accused of being focused on the past too much at times, but unquestionably has/had a proud legacy that most can’t match.
Ric Flair - Real Madrid For so long the ‘King‘ of the mountain, and we were always reminded so .
Mick Foley - Barcelona Traditionally speaking, the lovable underdog who had a public war with ‘The King’, and eventually managed to win the ‘big one‘.
Hulk Hogan - Newcastle Once the biggest thing, but has never really came to accept that the torched passed sometime ago. More of a circus act in recent years.
Ultimate Warrior - Sunderland Fierce rival of the above, but despite some highs, trails second in overall legacy.
Triple H - Man City For a while now, positioning itself to be the biggest there is. Many will say that the top spot hasn’t been truly earned.
Shawn Michaels - AC Milan Baddest boy of the 90s, but has been met with less animosity as the years rolled on - while taking more of a back seat to others.
Chris Benoit - Juventus Amazing legacy that has been maybe tarnished by other events.
Chris Jericho - Tottenham Very popular in general, but never really seems to be the ‘top dog’.
Randy Savage - Everton One of the biggest of the 80s, but sometimes overlooked at the outset. Had an epic few years at the top.
Jake Roberts - Leeds Biggest, baddest and meanest at one point, but has fallen into a steep decline in the last decade.
Trish/Lita - Rangers/Celtic Biggest fishes in a smaller pond. Ultra-loyal fanbases to this day.
JBL - Stoke Some managed to be surprised as to how well this one fared. Brought a no-nonsense style to proceedings.
Kane - Aston Villa Had a few highs, but seems destined to usually take a backseat to others. Many changes over the years haven’t helped matters.
Undertaker - Bayern Munich Probably stronger in the 90s, but still in the hunt these days.
Rey Mysterio - Fulham Underdog that has often embarrassed the bigger boys, proving the size of the dog in a fight.
Diesel/Kevin Nash - Blackburn On top in the mid 90s, but crashed and burned.
Goldberg - Valencia Huge deal for a short while - but faded away overtime.
Hardcore Holly - Bolton been in the big leagues for so long, but often people wondered why.
Bruno Sammartino -Wolves trailblazers from the black ‘n’ white era.
Terry Funk -West Brom seems to leave - then comes back, time and time again.

When were Newcastle ever the biggest thing? If anything they're The Brian Kendrick. They talk themselves up but never won anything of importance :pac:

They won five league titles from I think 1905-11. Sounds Hogan like to me, LOL. :pac:

Even he got one in recent times though it did require him shifting from the black and white colours ;)

I'd agree. I dunno where that leaves Austin tho.

Here's my input into the party:

    Vince McMahon-Alex Freguson.

Biggest single entity ever to have an impact in team making, made the most money, has been around for what seems like forever and will around forever too. Personal antics have also created talking points.

What I meant by 'loved and loathed', was that as popular as Austin was, when he came up against the likes of Bret or the Rock, the crowd would be 60-40 for him at most. Same crowd split when you watch a United game in a pub really, lol - if you follow my thought process.

Don't get HHH/Man United comparison from the poster above, as HHH is considered by most wrestling fans to have never been 'the top guy' in any given era, like Manchester United were obviously the 'team' in England for the 90s, and maybe of the last decade too, though much closer there!

Fergal Devitt - Spartak Moscow. An Irish lad over there who we all hope will be great and come home some day.

Glad to see Arsenal is The Rock - I love both!

I agree, Sheamus is defo Shamrock Rovers - both were nowhere a couple years ago, now Sheamus is the WWE champ, and Shamrock Rovers are on the verge of winning their first championship is donkeys years, with a nice new stadium.

    A few more....

Finlay - Millwall - both like to fight but both never win titles.
Eddie Guererro - Wimbledon - Both were one of the best a few years ago, both loveable by many, both have sadly passed on.
Mark Henry - West Ham - both hard as nails.
Evan Bourne - Blackpool - Great one week, buried the next week.
Kurt Angle - Bayern Munich - Highly professional, respected, efficient.
TNA - MLS - Where the old guys go to retire.

MVP - Newcastle Utd - A long time ago, exciting, fresh, and lauded to be the next champion, never got there and has steadily declined since

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,630 ✭✭✭steelcityblues

LOL at the TNA/MLS one - really made me laugh!

I was thinkin' Brian 'Loose Cannon' Pillman and Wimbeldon might be a better fit, as they were both dangerous and mad as f*ck!

The Miz - Rangers: Loved and hated in equal measure. They win lots of titles in their own division but usually get a hiding when they take on the big boys.
