Keeping Hair Blonde

    Hoping someone can help.

I colour my hair at home and have been doing for a couple of years.

It is always great in the beginning but after a week or so it goes a really brassy / yellow colour.

I've tried various shampoos but nothing seems to help.

Anyone got advice on keeping it blonde, shampoos you recommend, conditioners?

I use a ash blonde, normally a 9.1 - that's the colour I want it to stay

Have you tried toni + guy's purple shampoo? It's usually available in boots with that 3 for 2 offer. I've used it before and it really does keep the brassness away. The purple counteracts it or something. I've also heard about that putting ketchup in your hair trick, but I don't really fancy that, the SMELL! I've only ever dyed my hair at home once, and it did turn out slightly on the orange side... Dark roots are my number one enemy! If only I could afford to get my highlights done more often!

I've tried a few of them purple shampoos, I don't think I've used the Toni n Guy ones.

It's just awful when it goes that brassy colour :-( There has to be something to keep it looking blonde!

I was using a Loreal one that was recommended by my hairdresser, but bought the mini Trevor Sorbie shampoo and conditioner for 'platinum and ice blondes' when I was going away, and love them. Says on the back they have semi permanant dyes in their product (?) but I really really notice it makes a difference.

    Hey

I had my hair platinum blonde for 2 years and I swear by Aveda Blue Malva shampoo and conditioner. The conditioner is about 28 (which is expensive) but it's brilliant! I used to put it in every couple of washes and leave it for a few minutes and it will clean up any brassy tones in your hair! I sometimes used only the conditioner with a regular shampoo so if you don't fancy forking out on both just get the conditioner.

It also works great on highlights!!

I'm using a l'oreal professionel shampoo that's a really dark blue. Just once a week and leave it on for a few mins. It seems to be a lot stronger than the purple ones.

Oooh where did you get it.

It seems that purple is the answer!

The lee stafford for platinum blondes are great really keep it white blonde. Hate that brassy colour too. Bought the little 3 pack of heat treatments i know label says it removes canary yellows :)
Also bought the shampoo and conditioner when it was 3 for 2. Was great to use every second wash with the treatments once or twice a month also. If had no roots i'd have been white blonde all the time :( hate bloody roots :(

I have highlighted hair and use Aveda Shampure Shampoo & Conditioner...but delighted to hear about Blue Malva....I think I will invest....Just one thing, do you need to leave the conditioner in for a few minutes also if used with the shampoo? Thanks for your comments.

+1 for Aveda Blue Malva shampoo and conditioner!!! Amazing stuff. Leave in the conditioner in as long as you can (i.e. while taking a bath or pottering around the house for an hour) before rinsing out.
I also just got Philip Kingsley "pure silver" conditioner, another one with violet tones to get rid of brassiness, just for a change (I've been using the Aveda one for years). Hopefully it'll do the job too.
    Good luck!

Be careful with the Blue Malva. I left it in once for about 20 minutes and my hair had a blue/lilac tinge off it until I washed it the next time!

I thought this was about natural blonde hair when I saw it first! Anyone with any suggestions on that front would be greatly appreciated....mines starting to go on me now :(

    It's €9.50 here:

Any hairdresser that sells l'oreal preofessionel should have it too.

I've been using Provoke Touch of Silver: Silver Sensations shampoo for silver hair. I went from red to blonde so some of my highlights are quite brassy and its really helped. Smells amazing too, got it in my local chemist and not too expensive from what I remember. My hairdresser recommended getting shampoo for silver/grey hair, which I found weird but its fantastic.

You could try using a toner yourself at home too after getting it done.
