.... if you do , what type of ticket/pass would you recommend getting?

Apart from the student travelcard is there something like the Scholar/Schoolchild pass? Thanks

When i used to get it, the monthly bus/rail ticket used to work out cheeper, and less hassle

It all depends on where you're travelling from.

I'm going from Greystones so there's not really a guarantee that the next DART will go there, so bus/rail was better.

Student monthly rail is 75, monthly bus is 93.

Some people I know, get the weekly tix, theyre 23.50 a week AFAIK.

Thanks for the quick replied. I would be coming from Dun Laoighre.
    Student monthly rail is 75

Does it depend on how far you go? ... A scholar weekly was about 7.40 from Dun Laoighre to Booterstown. But from Dun Laoighre to Pearse its 11.50 ish....

For the monthly, I'm pretty sure it doesnt matter where you're coming from. Weekly it does indeed though, weekly is only 5 days aswell.

On a side note, I hate the difference in prices between Bray and Greystones.

Adult Return Greystones- Dublin -8 euro
Adult Return Bray- Dublin - 4.70

    ITS ONE FREAKIN STOP!

Could you not just get the cheapest one for a month, say for a child? Would you ever get caught out?

Really not worth it - I've been with people who have gotten child tickets (meant to be under 16 ) and they are 17/18 and they've fined!

They do catch a huge number of people out who do this!

The bus and rail one that is 93e works on all suburban rail.. so you can go out to Maynooth, up to lusk etc on it. Very good ticket.

Its a calendar month tho, so make sure you get it before the start of the month. It can also mean it's not worth getting in December, January, March or May which is a pain.

It does allow unlimited bus and rail travel every day of the month tho. So if you use it it can be very good value!

This sounds perfect! Because getting the dart in the mornings is handier but in the evenings the bus is better for me. And if just the dart pass is 73 ish i don't mind paying the extra 20 for the bus...

Do you need a special id to get one?

I actually have a student travel card but have never been asked to show it when buying the ticket.

As matthew said, monthly bus&rail is really handy for heading around on the weekends.

I have also seen it happen that ticket inspectors would wait in the driver's carriage untill the train left Bray to catch the people who only have a return to Bray and not Greystones. Kinda ridiculous considering the amount of times in the past these people have had tickets to Greystones and had to pay for a bus from Bray. Ahh well!

I got the adult monthly rail instead of the student because it worked on weekends and was only 10c extra or something. The only thing about the adult monthly is that it only works between your station and your destination station, so for example for you it'd be between Dun Laoghaire and Pearse.

 The student monthly works on weekends too, I've been getting it for years now.

I'd say the bus/rail ticket is very handy, but I personally just go for the rail ticket because it's significantly cheaper. You need to have a Student Travelcard to use the Student tickets, and you could get fined if you use one without the card, even if the ticket was sold to you without them asking for it. They're only €15 for the year, so they're definitely worth getting.

I know this is probably true but don't rely on this fact. They're supposed to strictly enforce a student card for a student ticket. In fact the number on the travelcard should be printed on the ticket. Anything less is somebody not doing their job and would be taken very seriously by anyone within Irish Rail.

Secondly, I don't think Scholar and Student tickets are the same thing. It was my understanding that the scholar/schoolchild tickets were for secondary school students only.

Schoolchild (yellow card) = under 15
    Scholar (green card ) = under 18

True true. I've always got mine in the local newsagents. I usually write my TravelCard number on it, just in case! But yeah, I wouldn't advise anyone to take the chance. Plus the travel card gives other good offers too!

Oh sorry it's the weekly one that doesn't work on weekends, which I used to get!

I get the monthly adult one because it's a euro or so cheaper than the monthly student!

That is ridiculous?! I thought the whole point of all the student cards etc is that it works out cheaper?

In general, that is the case. but you find things like this the odd time.

Isn't that a 5 day rolling ticket rather than a weekly one. So if you bought it on Wednesday it'd work for the weekend...?

Well as I said the adult only allows you to go between the two stations you specify, whereas the student allows you to go anywhere on the dart and (I assume) commuter lines. But yeah it's pretty annoying.

93 euro is €18 more expensive than dart only.

If you only get the bus on 7 days during that time, it makes more sense for you to get seperate dart tickets and bus tickets (seeing as the bus ticket is 30 days non consecutive)

Bus is cheaper, €2.50 per day you use it, compared to €2.45 for the dart if you use it or not. So I take the bus during summer!

Whether you're going to use it for transport or not, I'd recommend getting the student travelcard. A lot of shops that do discounts for students require a student travelcard rather than a plain ole' student card. I didn't get a student travelcard last year because I get cheap transport anyway, and then every time I went to Boots for something other than prescriptions they were all "a zillion euro please, you have no student travelcard".

Its a different ticket type so its a different price. The Adult version is even more expensive.

I find the cheapest option is to get the 30 Day Student Rambler ticket for €75 from Dublin Bus. The fact that it is non-consecutive days means that I generally get 1.5 months out of a ticket, and I am not paying more during the months that we don't have college such as December etc.

These tickets are very very handy. Also handy if you want to make long expensive journeys on the bus/during the summer months.

I commuted to college on the dart/bus for two years before I moved to town. I used to buy the monthly bus/rail, it was handy because I could choose either a bus or a train and I could use it at the weekends.
