Who fancies living in a church?

Just browsing through Daft was somewhat amazed to spot two churches for sale as residential properties.

The church in Limerick appears to be a decent enough conversion but the one in Sligo appears to be an unrealistic proposition as a home in its current state and would imagine it costs a small fortune to heat. What are yer thoughts folks. Would you like to have a graveyard as your back garden?

Anyone else spot any unusual religious or commercial properties converted in residential when browsing daft.ie or myhome.ie? There could be other such churches out there for all I know

    WOW....

The one in Limerick does in fact look like a home from the inside - the one in Sligo I would burst into flames as soon as I crossed the threshold!! :D

I can't imagine living in a church, that still looks like a church - I mean come on at least take out the pulpit!!

Although in saying that there are the eccentric types out there that would love something like this. Personally though, it creeps me out somewhat!!

have to say I really like the look of the silgo one - if I was going to buy an interesting property I'd want to look interesting inside and out and the limerick one looks too much like a bog standard house on the inside. And you don't need to live in a church to be beisde a graveyard, friend just bought an old farm house in KK that's got it's own graveyard.

Have seen a few old train stations and the like pop up from time to time on daft. There's one down in tipperary that's been done up and looks fantastic.

there are some fantastic properties in Kilkenny - down beside my parents an old mill was converted into residential property - only downside is that it floods - but the property is 4 stories, so I guess there is nothing on the ground level but entry access...

then there are the old houses in Mount Juliet that the estate workers lived in - some beautiful cottages in and around the stables.

i never realized how bright and spacious they could be! i always imagines a church conversion to be dark... and well... spooky

They're both quite well done imo. I'd love to live in either, if only they were in Dublin!

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest either but am sure there are those who wouldn't be do keen on the idea and then again the general public might have a right of way into your back garden also?

I agree, apart from pic 7 the Clarina one looks like any old house on the inside.

The first looks like a proper conversion, with small rooms, and (probably) insulated walls. The second one has one big room which would probably cost a bit to heat up, and with the balls free of plaster, I doubt heat retention would be that great.

In saying that, the one in Sligo leaves a lot more that could be changed. Putting insulation on the walls, and maybe making a few small rooms on the ground floor, and having a large room on the 2nd floor could work, or vice versa.

Redec the Sligo one out like a church, and rent it out for orgies :P

this is a great example of a church converted into apartments. And directly in Dublin City Center/Portobello.
lived close to it and was always intrigued by a church converted into apartments... never been inside but the pics look great. something different. would love to live in one....

The Church you linked to in Portobello looks really well done Tara73. I wonder how many units there are in it.

I'm wondering what chain of events occur such that a Church comes onto the market as a residential property in the first place.

    It depends on the tradition/denomination.

RC Churches tend not to be sold but to be allowed to fall into ruins.

Church of Ireland/ Presbyterian and others, will decommission/deconsecrate a Church /Chapel when it is no longer viable as a place of worship..eg falling congregations. And then it can be sold.

There are some that become restaurants etc; depends on the wishes of the buyer/planning etc.

This is one of the best church conversion's ever done in Ireland and featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs. It's roughly the same price as the one in Sligo but that's where the comparisons end, this one is an example of how a church conversion should be done.

    Events like this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settlements_and_bankruptcies_in_Catholic_sex_abuse_cases#Payments_to_victims

Several church's in the US have filed for bankruptcy. Total payout to victims was over $1.2 billion.

Pity we don't see more of it here tbh.

I did live in a church for a while- was absolutely fantastic! Open plan, which was nice, but have to admit it was chilly in winter. The place had exposed stone and very little insulation, so a multifuel stove was essential, but loved living there. It didn't come with a graveyard, so no worries about that stuff. I'm not religious, and not bothered by any of the baggage that goes with religion, so no worries for me about ghosts or any of that.
Defo recommend it- fun house and loved the tower!

I used to live down the road from that when it was being developed in the mid 90's. The apts were nicely done, but some very cramped and pricey for the time, but as the boom mushroomed, they turned into a nice investment. I considered buying one to live in and rent out a room but the banks were'nt doling out the dosh like the way they were 5 or 10 years later.......

Wow that former glory site is great, it's bookmarked already :D

€295k for a huge church, if only I had some money!

There's a lovely Mill for sale outside of Freshford - http://www.daft.ie/searchsale.daft?id=338072

Inside is pretty much gutted but it's been on the market for well over 2 years now so could be picked up cheap and there's scope to really do it up but only for someone with a good eye and willing to put alot of work in.

Wish I had the time and money, would love to get the old wheel turning.

There's plenty of restoration projects out there if you know where to look.
Here's a church in Westmeath for 100k with planning permission for a 3 bed extension.

I was looking everywhere on the formerglory website for a fabulous church conversion in Galway but couldn't find it. Just found it there a few mins ago, they had moved it on the website from the fully restored section.
There are four pages of detailed photos of the restoration project.

Some amount of churches out there for sale. Away more than I would have imagined.

I could be well of the mark but I reckon €295k would look like loose change all the same by the time you get this particular church up to scratch as living accommodation.

Yeah your right, very nice place though. Himself and the missus kept the original features like the confessional was the coat closet on the way in

Wow, now thats some conversion! I think that must be the most unconventional kitchen in Ireland:). Altar area reminds me very much of the altar area in my local church apart from the fact theres an altar with a pulpit and tabernacle in my local church and well, a kitchen in this one. Very similar dimensions and layout though with a side door off the altar to the sacristy in the exact same place.

Specification of the finish appears to be very high. Would imagine the conversion cost an absolute fortune. Would seem that those completing the conversion were cognisant of heating costs and heat retention also.

    Apologies for digging up a two year old topic but I discovered last night that the wonderful restored church that appeared on Grand Designs has just come on the market. From what I remember the couple who own it paid more than this to restore it;
