If you apply for the grant for the first time and you're not going into first year, or a mature student, what's the story? I'm reading the "persons to whom this scheme applies" thing. And it doesn't say anything about normal students who aren't first years? But surely you can still get it? The people who get it each year don't fall into their categories either. Does anyone know?

try contacting your local county council for information on it. i wouldn't know as i applied for it in 1st year and just had to get it renewed each year.

try looking on studentfinance.ie. there's some guidance notes there that may be some help.

Yes you can indeed apply for grant regardless of what year you are in, the grant is only valid for a certain period of time once you apply for it (4 years I think) so you'll get payment for 4 years. I'm going into second year myself and applied for the grant this year for the first time.

Its valid for the length of the course, so long as you don't repeat a year.

if he applied in first year, he would have got it for 5 years then (4 + 1 post grad).
