Headed for a run this morning from Glenmalure following Wicklow way south. Some people had left cars blocking the access path leading into the Wicklow way. Not sure if they were campers, walkers or whatever. Not sure if its a regular occurence? Pretty stupid thing to do considering mountain rescue use the various access points to get onto the trails to higher ground to give assistance to people in distress. Not 500m away there is ample parking at Glenmalure. Thoughtless behaviour.

You should have given the ranger a buzz.

Is that the small area to the right just before the bridge as you're coming down into Glenmalure? If so, yes I've often seen cars parked there.

No.. leaving the crossroads heading south, turning in right to go the Wicklow way, cars were here back to back. Its narrow so no room either side of cars for other vehicles. You cross the ford (which in this weather is a bridge) and you are wicklow waying.

On my way back the owners (I presume) were there getting changed. I asked them how would mountain rescue get past if need be. They looked suitably embarrassed and said they were going then.

Well it's not really a problem if they are on hand to move the cars, for example if you are picking up people it saves a 500m walk along narrow wicklow roads on which there are many crazies driving. But then it is in our nature to assume the worst and speak accordingly I suppose...

OK, I know where you mean. Sounds awfully like the actions of a certain large well-known Dublin walking club (who shall remain nameless!) .. they make little or no attempt to car pool, and I'd be willing to bet that 90% of those cars just had one single occupant. I've seen the car park at Glenmacnass go from nearly empty to brimming at the edges within the space of 15 minutes once, and it was just such an instance.

    walking club?

surely these people should know better? whatever about not car pooling (which is as bad) but assuming they are walkers there not going to be on hand to move any cars in the god awful case of someone being in trouble on the hills.

would i be alone in saying name them and shame them?

I can't imagine any self respecting walker blocking access. I can only speculate that they were once off users of the WW so didn't know any better. The cause could be helped by signage on the barriers to totally spell it out.

name and shame name and shame. people that have no regard for other people or lack foresight for safety deserve to be named and then they may learn a lesson. when with my college hiking group we always bussed to our location as a rule. no cars this way no blocking roads etc.
