Almost as many new cars sold in 1970 as in 2008!

    Morris No. 2 seller!

No Jap cars - some impact they've made on the market since. When were they introduced to the European Market? From a point of continuity Ford is obviously the best franchise to have.

I wonder what those three Pontiacs were that were sold in 1970!?!

    Good find Blue! :)

    Registration porn! Lovely!
    Thanks for that Blue.
    Those pontiacs are unusual alright.

One of the Pontiacs was 7272IK. A Firebird Formula 400!

There is a large amount of Audi's on that list.

Were they being assembled in CKD form in Dublin?

Surprised how few Volvos, BMWs, and Citroens were selling.

13 Rolls Royces sold in '69 and '70. Silver Shadows i guess. I supppose there was a fair amount sold over the years here.

The interesting thing is that I count 10 manufacturers on that list that are no longer with us, 4 that don't sell here (Lancia, Rover, MG & Pontiac) and Ford sold over twice as much as it's nearest competitor.

I'd love to know what the other's were.

It is still around although in extremely poor condition.

The 'other' 13 cars would include Aston Martins, Porsches and certainly one or two TVR.

I see the "poor mans Aston" the Jensen sold a respectable few,
was there a Jensen Dealer in the Republic at the time?

    Belonging to Brenny Lawless?

Why so few Citroens? With the DS and 2cv you would have expected more?

Also Wolseley outselling Merc and Rover. 5 years later it was gone.

Citroen stopped selling the 2CV for a long time in the UK, they started again around 1975, not too sure when they stopped. Ami 6 and others were only sold in tiny numbers in RHD. The H van was LHD only. Which really only leaves the DS I think.

Wolseley was merged into British Leyland, I think the last car they built was what later became the "Austin Princess".

I think they were too dear, compared to other markets. Irish price was hiked, I think.

Most cars are sold in to this country cheaper than the UK, it's our tax system that makes them so expensive. Of course that's why they are sold cheaper in the first place, because if they were sold at the same rate plus IE tax most regular cars would be completely unaffordable.

Make that at least 11. Pontiac is well and truly gone, Rover doesn't really exist either and MG lives on in badge only.

7 Rileys in 1970, were probably the last of the 1969 models when the marque was dropped. Any idea what kind of Chrysler models were available, was that incorporating Simca and Rootes models? No Bentley unless its in Others:)

Hillman Hunter and Chrysler Avenger were big sellers back then.

When I was in National school the rumour was that Hillman went bust because their cars were so good they never broke down so no one needed to buy a new one . Either way, a very robust car and they were still being built in Iran until a few years ago.
