    On Linux
    easily.

    On Windows

you'd have to use "Ad hoc" (which is bad) or get 3rd part Airpoint Software.
Then you can use Internet Connection Sharing....

    On Mac
    Also possible.

But the iPhone has its own 3G.

each time i try set up an adhoc connection its available but has no internet connection, i'm nearly at the limit for my iphone 3g this month so dont want to run up high charges on my bill

You need to set up Internet sharing (ICS) or Bridge also.
