Hi ,I've got an issue with my ps3 at the moment ,it gets very noisey after about 10 minutes.

Is there anything I can do with it ? ,has anyone ever opened it up to fix this problem ?

    Thanks.

This happened to mine about a month before it got the YLOD.

You can open it up if you want and clean it out, mine was very dusty the first time it was opened.
There are plenty of videos on youtube on opening a PS3.

Probably a build up of dust. Stick a hoover to the side of it and suck as much out as you can.

I hoovered mine just the other day, was getting fairly loud when playing MW2 and even dvds and blu-rays, which it used to be quite quiet doing, sorted it out just giving it and the area it sits a good hoovering

more than likely on its way out to ylod mine did that before ylod a week later.

Go to a mates house and play their xbox. come home and you won't even hear the ps3 fan :P

On a serious note, sounds like its on it's way out tbh.

Aye my PS3 40Gb getting increasingly louder was the beginning of the end for it via YLOD.

What is the story with the YLOD anyway? mines in warranty but it has been getting louder lately, hoovering it seems to fix it for a while, does it get sent back to sony or will whereever you bought it replace it? its an 80gb phat

You don't have to worry so, just back up anything you value on your PS3. They basically send you one that has been refurbished .ie was broke before but now working fine.

What? fcuk that i dont want a refurbished one, probably be destroyed in scratches, ugh I hate the thoughts of owning something that someone else had before

I'd bring it back to a shop and demand a replacement.

    Because it is loud?

Sony tell you in the manual to keep up the dustbusting on the machine's vents.

Believe it or not my 360 is silent all the time ,even when the room gets up to 28oC and it's on for hours.

It's been noisey for about a year now ,I have it over two years now.
The noise only bothers me when I'm watching blu-ray's and I'm contemplating buying a blu-ray player. But not sure if I should just buy another ps3 and leave my old one in my parents house.

They replace the externals completely, I have a refurbished one and it's in mint condition.

Ah ok, thats not too bad so, would hate to have some smudgy, scratch ridden console, its the reason I wanted a phat instead of a slim, its shiny :D

My 60 gig has been fans had been going mad for the last couple of weeks and on saturday night playing MW2 it shutdown and I got the YLOD :( Spent 3 hours yesterday repairing it using the Gilksy guide and got it back working, but this fix is basically the same issue as the 360 3ROD and the fix will only last a couple of weeks/months so I'm going to trade it in for a Slim. BTW my PS3 had zero dust in it so hoovering it isn't going to really help, I'd trade it in for a slim if you can.

My ps3 is the 40GB ,any ideas what I might have to pay to get a slim ?

I was in Game Liffey Valley yesterday and they offered me 150 for my 60gig which i thought was a bit low, so I would say you might get between 120-150 euros, so your looking at between an extra 180-160 euros for a 120gig Slim PS3. If i were you I would try HMV, Gamestop & Game to see who will give u the best price.

Cheers for the tip ,I still have the original box etc ,machine works fine apart from the noise.

Edit : The fan seemed to get louder after I installed a 320GB scorpio drive ,so when I replace the drive the sound may dissapear.

Put back in the original drive if u still have it and see if the fans get quiter, I found the fans got louder while playing say MW2, the Scorpio is probably generating additional heat, which would cause the fans to kick in earlier. If it makes no difference I'd go and trade it in before its to late.

Hello again ,just thought I'd post that I re-installed the original hard drive ,playing a blu-ray now for a while and theres no sign of the fan kicking in.

Maybe I got a bad hard drive (gets very hot).

That could be it some harddrives run very hot added to the heat from the power supply and CPU & GPU it would make the fan work extra hard to keep the machine cool, if you have MW2 I would play that for a couple of hours to stress test your system, if fans keep relatively quite you should be fine.

The only problem I have now is that I don't have enough space ,I'll have to see how much a new machine will cost ,might just buy a 120GB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,466 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

If you can wait a month or two there are new rev's of the PS3 coming out the standard will be 160gig and the high end model will be 320 gig, they are already out in Japan and should be released here before xmas

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

Thanks snake ,but the bloody thing is still making noise:mad:
I wouldn't trade it in like that ,some poor kid might end up with it at christmas.

I took it apart last night to have a look at it ,no dust inside it at all ,but there was virtually no thermal grease on one of the processors.

I put some crappy thermal grease on them ,but it didn't make much difference. My last resort is to buy mx3 thermal paste and hope for the best ,I think the paste I used is way too thick to be any good.

Sorry to hear that you seem to be technically proficiant, you should try the heatgun repair as it silenced my 60gig before I traded it in you should pick up a heatgun fairly cheaply, make sure you get one that you can set the temp to 350 deg I had one and had to guess but lucky for me it worked out.

    http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2376

If you managed to hairdryer off the warrently label I'd still trade it in, the person who buys it will have a warrenty from the shop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

I'm not technically proficiant with this stuff ,I work on gas appliances and happen to have thermal grease from parts I carry with me:o

I've ordered proper pc thermal paste and should have it tomorrow.

I'd no intention of opening up the ps3 when I started this thread ,but I got so annoyed when the machine started making noise again that I just went and opened it up.

I appreciate your help ,but I got annoyed with myself for being so sure about the hard drive causing the problem.

I applied Artic Silver to mine, I put a very thin layer using a credit card, I would hope that it will sort your issue out. Let us know how you get on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

I ordered mx-2 and xigmatec(not sure bout name) ,going to decide which one to use first tomorrow.

I noticed that metal based paste has become popular ,but people say it doesn't last long.
Anytime you heat metal ,it weakens ,so I don't see the point in relying on it for long term use.
I'm sure it's great at first ..... ,but my geeky boards side says no. Thats how me thinks about this stuff.

    Thanks for your replies

Don't mind that Metal Based compounds have better thermal properties, I've been using them on PC's I've built for years, the pc I'm typing this on now has Artic Silver and I built it way back in 2005, so you'll only have to apply a good quality Metal based paste once, by the time it gives up you'll be upgrading to a playstation 4 :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭Scráib

After reading this post I was convinced mine was on the way out too. It had gone from quiet to steadily louder to ultimately sounding like a jet engine after 10 minutes of play from any game.

Yesterday I hoovered all the vents, and now it's quiet as a mouse once more. I had a marathon session today and not a peep out of it. It was so quiet I had to listen to see if the fan hadn't broken.

Hoovering those vents... never knew it made such a difference.

Any idea which one of these is best to use ?
    Arctic MX-2 or XIGMATEK PTI-G3606

    Both were delivered this morning.

I'm an Arctic fan here is a review of it http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/3989-arctic-cooling-mx-2-thermal-compound-review-6.html

Cheers snake ,thats the one I used earlier. Still the same noise after a while:(.
The ps3 is working properly as the fans go back down when the xmb is onscreen for five minutes.

Theres heat coming from the opening of the ps3 aswell .

I cleaned both the sink plates and the cpu's with isopropynol and they were both spotless before I put the paste on. Put it on with a card like you said.

The only thing I can think of next is either a new fan or make sure the heatpipes are tight on the heatsinks

    Oh the joy:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,466 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

The Artic Silver can take a bit of time to bed down and reach there full thermal transfer properties. Then again it could be a faulty thermostat on the PS3 Mainboard. I take it the noise of the fans is getting on your nerves, I would really trade it in if u can

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

The reason I don't think sensors are faulty is because the fans go back down when I exit a game etc.
There is also hot air coming from the ps3.

The heat is not getting away properly and once things heat up ,it's harder to cool down. If the fan/sinks were working properly I don't think there'd be the initial build up of heat.
As you know I'm no expert ,but I'd like to try and sort this out ,now that I've started at it.

I'm sure i'm in building/upgrading territory ,I won't bother anyone on the forum here anymore.
    Thanks for all the help.

Whati I did as well do u know the springy brackets that are over each heatsink they have 2 screws in each of them, I bent them an extra bit to hold the heatsinks that bit tighter against the cpu & gpu, you could try that.

Nice one ,I wasn't sure about that. I didn't want to stress the cpu's too much;)

It's not really much hassle taking the machine apart ,ten minutes and its stripped down. It'll be nice when I've fixed it.

I've noticed that there's a fan for the ps3 called a tallismoon whisper. Have you heard anything about it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,466 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

Yes I would go and get one of those you can read a couple of guys experiences with them on avforums http://www.avforums.com/forums/ps3-hardware/1153922-talismoon-whisper-replacement-fan-ps3.html

Apparantly it has 19 blades versus the PS3's 15, its worth a try

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭yoshytoshy

Hopefully won't need to (fingers crossed).

Machine is on over half an hour ,room is up 27oC and the machine is still quiet. :)

When I opened the ps3 up tonight ,I noticed that the thermal paste had squeezed over the sides of the cpu's.

So this time I barely put any grease on ,just a lick of it. Bent the springy brackets so they were good and tight.
Also put some thermal paste on the copper heatpipes ,where they meet the tall part of the sink.

Them brackets were virtually loose when I first opened the ps3.

    Lubbly jubbly

    Thanks very much.:)

Thats Great News :) I'm delighted your getting somewhere, I know the pain of running into issues with the PS3 & my first Xbox 360. Keep us updated if the issues has been fully resolved also I'd nearly stick back in the bigger hard drive if you haven't already.

Ps3 is on three hours now ,have had a bbc HD blu-ray playing in it all this time and still can't here the machine.

Room temperature is still above 25oC.

    Silence is Golden! :)
