How do I stop an App updating?

I have an app that is updating but it's over 10mb so it needs wifi. For some reason it's constantly updating and even though it's been connected to my wifi all night it's not even a quarter way on the loading bar yet. I can't delete it by the usual method but it seems to be constantly downloading so it's chewing up my download limit on my 3G dongle.

Is there anyway to just get rid of this altogether before it eats more into my limit?

Switch off the phone and switch it back on?

Exit out of the program that is currently downloading a file or update. Press the single "Home" button on the bottom front of the phone. This will pause any update or download for that application.

Click on the "Settings" icon on the Home Screen. Scroll down to "Airplane Mode" and click the small toggle icon next to this option.
Tap on the toggle switch icon until it reads "Airplane Mode On." Airplane Mode immediately stops any cellular or Internet data transmissions--both ingoing and outgoing. The download will be stopped.

Hold down the "Sleep/Wake" button on the top right of the iPhone's casing. A virtual slider bar appears on screen. Use your finger to slide the slider bar arrow from the left side to the right side, which shuts the phone down.

I've had this in the past and for me I think it stops the download when you lose connection or takes too long and I had to go back into app store and log in again then restart it
I think the app store auto logs you out

I've tried all that but when I get back into it the app is just greyed out and I can do nothing with it only unpause the update. I can't even delete it which is a pain. It seems its stuck on an endless download.

side note: Do I have to individually update all my apps anytime I connect iphone to itunes or will it auto look for app updates itself??

ya dont need to have it connected to check for updates, just opeen itunes and on the left menu bar click apps, on the bottom right of the screen ya will see check for apps, when thats done there will be a blue button on the top right that says download all updates, click that and voila
