What lenses do you use?

    Hey Guys,

    I was recently looking at buying a new lens for my Canon 400D - I've got a 50mm 1.8 Sigma 18-200 F4.6-6.0 and a 18-55 kit.

I was looking at getting some 2.8L Lenses But after picking up a new Canon 580EX II (Beast of a flash btw), I noticed that I wont need the F2.8 type lenses anymore; (At F7.1 and 1/4000 ISO 100 in a small enough white walled room the flash illuminates perfectly)

So what lenses do you use? It might be able to help me find a new one, or even help anyone else looking for a lens.

Aperture is with the shutter speed your main creative tools. The aperture of the lens is not only a size of the hole to let some amount of light to go through onto the sensor (or film). You have the 1.8, so you should know why you would be thinking about f/2.8 lens instead of f/4.6.

I was doing a lot of indoor shooting for a talent show where lighting was crap, so I needed the 1.8, it wasn't for the fast shooting it was purely because of the lighting, same reason for me getting the 70-200 2.8L for shooing LOI Games. But wandering what lenses other people have (Focal lenghts, apertures etc.) gives me (and other people) a better example of what I need to look at, or spot something that was missed.

No lenses slower than 2.8 as a rule.

No on camera flash as another rule (95% of the time).

Definitely worth forking out for a bigger apature.
    I use a f2.8 17-55mm most of the time.

My most used lenses are my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 and my Sigma 10-20mm f3.5-4.5. If I did enough photography to justify it, I'd look for faster version of both, and for a 17-70 that was faster than the one I have as well. (Sigma 17-70mm f3.5-5.6)

50 1.4 is my most used lens, followed by 24-70 2.8

There'll be plenty of situations where you can't/don't want to use flash, and the fast lenses will come in very handy.

The 24-70 2.8 does really look like an effective lens, how much do they cost?

It's my most used lens too. Cost about €1000.

Guess I'm off to save my money, Looks like a great all 'round lens would have been handy during the week :P

Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 and 16-35 f/4 are my most used.

The 24-70 f/2.8 is on the body 90% of the time otherwise it's the nifty-fifty f/1.8

Feels great with the 50, the camera is so light! Forces you to use imagination too.

50mm f/1.8 for most of my shots (beauty/portrait), then the manual focus 85mm f/1.4 (gorgeous lens), then 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 (I think) for walkabout stuff. Mostly use primes though, they make you a better human being :)

I've got a 50mm 1.8 and a Sigma 18-50 2.8 which is a great all rounder lens and much cheaper than the canon equivalent, you should look into it OP.

17 - 55 2.8, are you getting the hint that the 2.8 is a useful tool;) No matter how good your caera or your flash there could always be a situation around the corner where you need that extra speed never mind the fact you may not be able to use flash!

    100 f/2.8 is my primary. 50-135 f/2.8 secondary. Ordering my 55 f/1.4 this month hopefully :)

I use the Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 but I want a nifty fifty. I'm pretty new to DSLRs though.

at the moment Pentax 18-250 lens.

I have an nifty fifty 1.7 autofocus (SMC F1.7 Pentax).
I wasn't using it, posted a for sale ad. Someone is interested in it but now I'm wondering if I'm being a bit quick in selling it so am playing with it a bit more.
it's great for portraits but I'm thinking would an F2.8 (17-55 or 24-70 etc) do the job better......

one single lens so far 85mm 1.8.
I want from Santa either wide angle zoom or tele-photo zoom lens.

My main walkaround is the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 but I've not had it long, prior to that most pics were taken with the 50mm 1.8 followed by the 18-55 IS kit lens and I've a 55-250 IS which has seen pretty limited use tbh.

I bought an old lens yesterday that weighs almost a kilo! Now I can weight lift while I shoot :D - It's an old vivitar 70-210, full manual, f/3.5. Other than that I shall be mostly using the nifty-fifty.

I shoot off a Nikon D90 and I use a Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 for the majority of my shots. It's a good all rounder and pretty good value compared to the Nikon alternatives.

If that isn't on then it's a trusty Nikon 50mm f1.8 'nifty fifty'- super value!

Pretty much all you need, unless you're into bird photography and need something longer.

The next lens I buy will be a wide, I like the look of those 17-55 f/2.8 nikon's ... but way out of budget for me atm. Maybe next year ...

At the moment it is 105mm macro, having a blast with it,
18-200 holiday and walkabout lens, 50-500 for the birdies.
