Just did the NCT today and failed. need to replace Front suspension Wishbones\wb bushes off and near side front and Anti-roll bar and links nearside front on a 2002 BMW 530D.

Just wondering how much this will cost and is it a big job?

    Thanks

    To give you an idea.

Eur 700 at main dealer for rear control arms both sides on a e39 530d.

If you are up for it, it's a doable diy job. It's fiddley but doable. The parts are fairly inexpensive. It's just a long fiddley job which is what the garages charge so much for. My local ford garage quoted me around 500eur to get the bushes replaced. I decided I'll save the money and do it myself. The tough part is getting the old bushes out and pressing the new ones in. But if you can remove the wishbone and anti roll bar and take it to a garage, they should press in the new bushes in them for much less. The big diy job is removing the wishbone and antiroll bar which takes time and fiddling around...

Another option is you can buy new wishbones and anti roll bars and they should come with the bushes already pressed in so all you have to do is replace the old parts with the new ones... The wishbones are fairly pricey but you can do it yourself. Won't need to go to a garage...

I'd just buy the wishbones save time mucking around with garages. Do as much as you can yourself. Of course you'll need to get tracking done after this type of job. :)

Would love to try to do the work myself but I would not be confidant I could do it correctly. I have gotten a quote of €300 to do the wishbones, bushes, anti roll bars and links for both sides from a reputable exBMW mechanic.

Additonal Query: Is there a part time course at night/weekends to learn car mechanics or anyone you can show you how to do this work if you supply the parts?

    Thanks

You could look around the BMW forums or youtube for tutorials on how to do the stuff and the Haynes manual is quite helpful too.

Though I'ld love to be able to do a part time mechanics course too. I wanna get a garage someday and restore classics...

In fairness €300 isnt bad considering the labour time involved, especially if your not comfortable, also you know its been done by a mechanic

I'll agree, 300eur is a really good price for a BMW whose suspension is a lot more complex than my Pumas.

It is a fairly labour intensive job.

Is that just for the labour?? The cheapest wishbones you get will be > €100 per side each. The bushes will be €30/side each. No idea how much the anti roll bar links would be but would guess €30/side. These are the prices for spurious parts, some of which might not be the best quality.

    I presume its only labour.

Wishbones, espeically OE ones are fairly pricey.
Though just fitting in new bushes onto the old wishbone would be much cheaper than buying new wishbones...
