Question...or should that be questions?? I've breen reading in some other threads about doing a pre nursing course. After doing this what are the chances of being accepted into nursing? I've looked around at a few of the PLCs but places are already full. 3 of my friends did the pre nursing course 2years ago but none of them were offered nursing? What are other peoples opinions/experiences? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Toodly, I'd say you have more hope of finding people with experience of your issue here. :)

The people who do pre-nursing can be sought after in England and Wales. It is not likely to get you nursing in Ireland but because you do work experience the course is well regarded in the UK.

Does anyone have first-hand experience of studying nursing/midwifery in the UK? I've read online that the fees are paid by the NHS, seems too good to be true!

Yes, a friend's fees and expenses were paid while she studied, she got a bursary. Ask at the college do they have anyone coming over from the UK looking for nursing students. Not saying it is automatic, but the possibility is definitely there.

that is absolotely brilliant good on you,i am hoping to go the same path as you. have my interview this week for pre nursing and then hopefully ill get to apply for nursing through fetac but if not i will go the mature entry route the folloing year wen i am old enough! any advice for the interview? i am so so nervous,i really dont want to mess up :(

Andrea88, try not to worry too much about the interview, (easier said than done, I know!), if it's anything like the one I had in Drogheda it'll be very informal. They asked about my educational and work background, why I thought I'd be a good nurse, and why I wanted to get into the course. That was pretty much it. Then they explained all about the course and the fees and the assessments and the work experience. It was all very friendly and relaxed. Best of luck!

thanks, yeah im really happy :) whats brilliant about the FEATC plc courses is that most of the marks go on assignments, like if you dont do well in the written parts then the assignments bring you up and thats how i got my distinctions. it is quite difficult though i know a few girls who didnt get in that way but if you puit in the work you'll do great. there is always the UK though, which probably isnt what ya wanna hear! you need 5-8 distinctions in most colleges in ireland but ya only need merits in the UK! but youll be grand!

in the interview just be yourself! tell them why you want to do whatever you want to do and show off your cv. it's my cv that impressed them. focus on your experience and achievements and then you will be fine!!! good luck :)

I got 305 in my leaving did pre nursing in Galway, got 12 distinctions and will be starting GMIT castlebar psy Nursing in September!

There is a chance with top marks that you can get it, but at the same time I know a friend who got the same results and didn't get an Irish offer in Nursing - A lot of people go to England!

I say go for it - I really enjoyed the course and if your up for nursing you will like!

I just completed a Pre Nursing Course in Limerick and I got offered Midwifery in NUIGalway, I also have 2 friends who got offered nursing in UL and WIT. I also heard that 2 people in the other class got General in UL.

And if you maybe want to do something different you can apply to Social Care or Applied Psychology of which I also know people who got places in these in LIT and in Dublin. There are offers through FETAC and we were all amazed we got them but we did all study and attend classes. I got 8 distinctions and my friends got 9 so if you stick at it you can get what you want.

Pre-Nursing is a difficult course, and requires a lot of study. If you're looking to progress onto a university or college such as UCD etc you need to get top grades in all 8 of your subjects. The competition is huge, and there is only about 60 places in all of Irelands colleges and uni's for FETAC students, so its very hard. Hundreds of students will be going for these places.

Available places can be seen here: http://www2.cao.ie/fetac/FETACNursingQuota.pdf

But dont let that put you off, you can also apply to the UK and from what I hear they really like FETAC Pre-Nursing students.

Also, at the end of the course you become a certified Health Care Assistant, which is pretty good and allows you to work in a variety of hospitals and care homes (provided there is jobs going which we both know how that is ), you also work a minimum of 15 - 25 days in a care setting, such as an elderly care hospital, nursing home, intellectual disability care etc. However, HSE hospitals will not take you but some private hospitals will.

For entry to third level colleges in Ireland is it true that you need only 5 distinctions to be entered in the lottery? that must include one in anatomy and physiology, introduction to nursing and Human growth and development?

    Thanks

Has anyone done the written ncc exam for nursing?

What is a good book for preparation?

They only give a few sample questions on the web site regarding the exam.

Mike Byron's book, The Ultimate Psychometric Test book, was the one I got. Probably available second hand because I can't imagine people using them more than once! (didn't do the test in the end, so can't help you there). Do lots of practice questions in timed conditions because in the test time is very tight, (I've heard).

Best of luck to everyone applying this year!
