I know of other support groups around the Country, but the midlands I'm sure needs a support group too. I know there is a group called Gay Westmeath, but they're more of a social group.

I don't know if we have enough people here to partake in such a group but I'm sure there would be some interest. I contacted Vanessa at TENI to see what the story is. Anyone else have an opinion.

I think this is a bit of a "build it, and they will come" situation - I'm sure there are a few people in the midlands who would really appreciate not having to go to Dublin or Galway to visit a support group.

I'll have a chat with the crew at teni and see what happens :)

I agree with this - I set up an LGBT social group a year ago - at first we had 3 people - now we have about 20 regulars

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thats great to hear. I'm not an authority on the subject, but like you johnny, it would be nice to have a group here in the midlands for trans people just to chat with.

I got in contact with Vanessa from TENI and she thinks it's a great idea. She wants to meet for a chat about it and to get the ball rolling. :D

You could look into the possibility of funding from a Partnership organisation e.g.

    List of them here -http://www.ndp.ie/Viewprnt.asp?mn=&nID=&fn=/documents/EU_Structural_Funds/operational_prog/local_partnership.htm

Fingal leader partnership are doing an LGBT group and the group I'm involved with in Bray got funding from Bray Partnership

Just an update. I'm heading to Dublin on the 18th of September to meet with all the crew from the five supports around the Country and TENI to chat about a new group here in Athlone :D Won't stop me from heading to Galway in September/October to Gossip.

So a new group is a possibility for the Midlands :) We just got to organise it now. And anyone who knows Vanessa or has met her, she's the coolest ever.
