    Hi lads,

Kenneth Egan is on the Marian Fincuance Show at the moment, but it will be available on podcast later for anyone who missed it. He talks about:

    - Retaining his Irish title.
    - Working towards the Olympics 2012
    - Decision not to turn pro (and how apparently the best boxers in the world are still amateurs  )
    - How he is funded.

Funny, I agree with him (in terms of skill anyway).

The overall level of skill at the top level of amateur is definitely higher than the pros. However, the pros punch harder and their durability and stamina are on a different level.

all best boxers are amateurs?? that's rubbish. The best boxers in the world are legitamite world champions and millionaires.

The "two sports" are difficult to compare. I don't think one can say which is more skilled, as they require subtle differences. Was Gamboa a better skilled fighter when an amateur? Or, is he better now? The AMS require scoring, tight defence and accuracy. The pro fights are all about that and so much more.

If Lomachenko went pro, does this mean that he becomes less skilled? I don't think so. Again, "both sports" require little things in each and more things in each.

In a technical point of view the skill level and the competition level is harder in Amateur Boxing, every fight is tough, in Pro boxing the majority of fights are 1 sided and the skill levels can be anything from dire to sublime, Mayweather for example could easily win olympic gold if he could enter it, where many pro's would not have a chance-Amateur boxers at the top end don't tend to make great pro's these days though due to the style favoured in amateur boxing these days, power and aggression means nothing anymore unfortunately.

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.
