1 hour to open My Documents!!!!

I have an advent 9215 with 2ghz dual ram running Vista. No problems with it up to the other day when I turned it on and heard a scratching noise. It stopped and loaded up but the next time I turned it on I get About 10 secs at the home screen before it stops. It took one hour to open my docs. It is insured but I don't trust the shop to back it up properly. I think they might just give me a new laptop and say they could not recover the hard drive. Anyway I want what's on the hard drive but it can't access it. Any ideas would it be a RAM problem or the motherboard. Also anyone ever bring a laptop back to these computer chain stores and have problems.

You are right to be wary of 'tech guys' at major pc chain stores!

sounds like your hard drive is knackered there are some specialist in dublin google them , but it will cost, or get an external caddy and try it your self first

Try safe mode, f8 while You're booting just before windows loads. If menus and files open fine in there You'll know its software/malware/virus

Safemode wasn't loading but just kept trying and it has with networking. I currently transferring everything to an external hard drive. Question is when I'm transferring back will programs still work on a different computer or is some stuff saved in a windows or system file. I don't want to tranfer it all back if there is a corrupted file and I'm back to square one. I've downloaded norton off the web and bought the webkey so that's why I ask.

Copying the drive wont be any use for programs, just data, unless you image the drive exactly.
