I have an Optonica SM-3636 amp
    1679_pict_big_optonica_sm3636_b.jpg

and JPW Sonata Bookshelf speakers rated at 8 ohm 70 watt 87db.

I'm unsure whether the amp will match the speakers ok? The amp is 2 x 65 watt @ 4 ohms. The speakers are 70 watt @ 8 ohms.

What you see in that picture is the amps rating at 4 ohms impedance , the amp itself will take speakers 4 ohms and above but the power rating at the higher impedance levels will be lower.

Electrically the speakers you have in mind will work fine with the amp.

No problems. Your speakers can take more juice (power-wise, it doesn't say anything about excursion) than your amplifier can provide, so you're ok.

The amp should drive the speakers well. Basically when a speaker has twice the impedance of that rated on the amp it means roughly half the wattage gets through so it will be 35+ watts at 8 ohms. With a speaker of 87 dB sensitivity that should be plenty of power to go loud in an averagely sized room. Some amps are quoted at 4 ohms to big up the power rating, thats all. Interesting amp BTW - looks like a 70's design. The JPW speakers should sound good.

I have two speakers at 1000 watts program
(500 watt rms @8 ohm each side)

Would the following spec power amp match the speakers??

    Power Amp Specifications:
    4Ω stereo: 2 x 500Wrms
    8Ω stereo: 2 x 250Wrms
    8Ω bridged: 1 x 800Wrms
    Max power: 1600Wmax @ 8Ω

500W RMS @ 8ohm? Wow, those speakers take a lot of heat. What's the make/model?

The amp will work fine (use in 8 ohm stereo), but if it sounds bad when you turn it up, turn the volume down or you might damage the speakers (amp delivering distorted signal to the speakers can fry the voice coils).

No idea. Lots of factors to think about. I say, move the gear over before they open, plug it in, play some stuff from your phone and decide if it's loud enough!
