    Hey,
I'm looking to buy a new laptop, simple enough; minimum 2GB RAM and 250GB hard drive, lightweight (under 2kg if possible) and a long battery life. I've got a budget of up to €550! Found quite a few that fit the bill except that they have no optical drive seeing as they're so lightweight and slim. Looking to stay away from Dell because of two disastrous laptops in the past/present! Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Do you really need an optical drive?

I have a Samsung x420 which fits all your spec more or less exactly. I got it in PC World for about €560 or €570 though I think there might have been an offer on it at the time.

Its an ok PC. Comes with an external USB DVDRW. The keyboard sounds a bit flimsy but I am getting used to it at this stage. Good battery life and an LED screen. I dont think the graphics card would be suitable for gaming.

Not an easy request! In the 11" category, there is the Gateway EC14D (here) one of the very few in its class to have an integrated DVD. Managing to find somewhere in Ireland/UK selling one could be tricky though.

The HP Pavilion DM1 is widely available here and also fits the bill, but its dual-core Celeron lets it down a bit. It's on sale at elara and other places if you google around.

You are limiting your options quite a bit by specifying an integrated optical drive at this price point and it's something you should maybe reconsider? I picked up an external DVD drive in Aldi and its no problem to bring around in a small laptop bag.

Alternatively, you might have better luck searching in the 13" category, although you might need to up the budget a little.

    Hi,
Thanks for all the replies, no I'm not totally set on the optical drive, I was just wondering if I had missed out on some possibilities. I was looking at this one but with windows 7 in Harvey Norman yesterday: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_Timeline_4810T_Laptop_LX.PBA0X.206/version.asp?switchc=e Reading lots of mixed reviews online though. I think I'll probably end up going for one with no optical drive!
