How to resurrect my iphone from the dead?!

    Hi everyone,

I have an iphone 3g and two weeks ago it decided to freeze for about 45 mins before shutting itself down.

I have tried to reset it by pressing the circular return button and the locking button together. The apple sign then appears on the screen as if it is resetting itself, but then it shuts back down to a black screen. A minute later, the apple sign will re- appear, together with the circular loading sign... It stays like this for a while before starting the process all over again.

Tonight, I downloaded the latest version of itunes in the hope that I could plug it in and reset the phone to its original beginning, but i tunes doesnt even recognise that the phone is connected.

Is my iphone dead and buried, or is there some way of fixing it?

    Thanks in advance!

You could try putting it into recovery mode - turn your phone off - plug the USB into your computer, but not the iPhone.

While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPhone should power on.

Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
Then use iTunes to restore your iPhone

Look up instructions on how to put your phone into DFU mode. It's a combination of the buttons but I can't recall the exact sequence.

Mine was doing what yours was exactly. When I got it into dfu mode iTunes finally detected it as " an iPhone in recovery mode ".

So far, I have got i tunes to recognise it in recovery mode. When I press the restore button, it starts to download and when it gets to the 11th minute, it says there is a problem downloading software and to try again later... any ideas?:o

OP if i were you, I would just download an old version of 3.1.3 and restore it with that by holding down shift and then clicking the restore button

here is a link to it. here

3g and ios4 dont like to play nice.

Can this be restored onto a 3G without having files backed up on cydia?

No it cant. What you can do is download the software yourself from a TRUSTED website and plug you phone in, when you click restore hold the shift key as you do and the browse for the firmware.

Kjl's posted suggested downgrading to 3.1.3 for 4.0.0. but some asked can it be done without shsh back up, which it cant. I suggested staying on 4.0. but downloading 4.0 himself from another site bypassing the error itunes was experiencing while downloading and restoring the firmware.

i think it can with a 3g but not with a 3gs and if its not possible he couldnt restore to os4 anyway because apple arent signing it anymore
