I work with a lad i like very much but he is finishing up in two weeks time. There is a party planned for him and i don't know if i should try asking him out. And if i do, what do i say? I suppose if i make a fool of myself, i wont see him again.

Exactly, if you haven't anything to lose then ask him out! Rather than waiting until he's half cut at his own leaving do - why not ask him out for a drink or for a meal before he goes and if it doesn't work out then you know he's going in a few days!

    Best of luck!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained ..... I say go for it.

There's an even easier way. Get his phone number, or give him yours. You have an excuse, say you would like to keep in contact... Ring him up and just say you are thinking of going to X, and you thought he might like to go along. If he refuses at any point you can emerge with your feelings intact. You can gauge his reaction when you mention the phone number.
