Putting you REFEREES on the spot?

I am in training to become a referee, mad as I may sound.
Okay so some of you refs/non refs out there may be able to help me in these real match situations:

Hurling and camogie are similar sports and have very little differences (here are two qs)

    1. In camogie, you can handpass the ball to score a goal (which obviously is NOT the case in hurling). However must the player have dropped the hurley before she handpasses it in?

    2. More challenging, In camogie the rules state you can tip an opponents hurley in the air or on the ground, unlike in hurling where a free is awarded (eg. Cork Waterford Munster Final a few weeks back). Take this real match situation therefore: a player is soloing the ball on the hurley and the defender comes in with a hurley, flicks the ball away aswell as tipping the attackers hurley. A foul or not?

Also, consider she attempts to flick the ball, misses and tips the attackers hurley. Foul or not?

Thanks for the help in advance.

PS: Aim to ref hurling and football games, not necessarily camogie or ladies football. But these are where the challenge matches temporarily lie...:)

    hey,

    1. no you dont have to drop the hurley, you can although its not a rule

    2. It really depends on the referees call on this one, it is illegal to play the hurley in the air but there is a thin line between this and hooking particularly if opponent has the ball. You can flick the ball away from your opponents hurl however you cant chop down at any stage, this will be an immediate foul, referees always enforce this rule whether it be in the air or on the ground.

You are allowed to make attempts to flick the ball however if you make contact with the person when you miss, this will also be a foul.

any other questions, just ask :)

    Hey Squareball,

Just wondering, is there any refs in your club? Im training to be a ref too and I must say im lucky to have 3 inter-county refs in my own club. One is camogie and the other two are Hurling and I often do umpire for them at the games they do,Local and Intercounty. Its good to go to them and see what they pull for. I've learned alot from going around with them anyway. Good to get the challenge games in too. Its handy having two uncle's and a cousin who are refs too because you get asked to do lineman etc aswell. Good luck on the way to reffing :D
