Is there a transmitter near the Loughrea area for picking up the english channels. I know I can probably get the Irish ones from Maghera but just wondering can I get the english ones too.

    Thanks

    Installation is near Craughwell

The transmitter for UK channels you need for that location is very far away.
In fact it's in geo stationary orbit above the earth.

You will need an aerial that looks like this [and a decoder]

There may be a deflector in the area transmitting the UK channels, someone in the area may be able to give a specific answer.

By the end of 2012 the deflector systems come to an end.

As Black Briar posted the other option is a freesat or free-to-air satellite receiver and dish, no subscription required.

There has been a deflector in Kilchreest ( above the village Gort side) for years. It is scheduled for the 2010 shutdown with the rest of them and as it picks up Brougher analoue and deflects it I would suspect it lost BBC1 this week as Castlebar kicked off DTT. Referred to here

If you can see that part of the sky ...go with satellite,

If I do use a VHF aerial and UHF, both pointed to Maghera, will I need masthead amps and if so won't I need 1 for each aerial.

Get something like a Johansson 7401 it amplifies and combines both signals. Will you be amplifying the signal again you might not need the masthead amplifier?

Yes I'd say iprobably will be amplifying it again as there will probably be a link amp for amgic eyes from a sky box for FTA

Which one of these would be best or will they both do the job.

You are very unlikely to need a masthead amp in your location as you can probably see the mountains in Co. Clare where Maghera is located from your roof . For a loft installation you may though or if feeding over 2 tv sets.

If I have to do more than 2 TV's, would a link amp do it if I had it near enough to the aerial, ie. in the attic as near to the external aerial as poss. Then again I might have to run the aerial lead down to the FTA box so that run would be long. I think a masthead might be better all round but not sure.

Anyone any other opinions on whether masthead amp be required or what one to use etc?

    Thanks

It's very easy to add a masthead amp afterwards.
See what it is like without it first.

The mastead amp would need a powersupply unit by the way which would have to be plugged into the mains.
