    Hiya ,
Need some help I recently bought a 20 year old mercedes 2.2 coupe . beautiful car and since i`ve bought it i`ve done 1500 mile . problem is that yesterday i went and got prtrol and drove into town (about 25 miles ) and home again and when i went out to start it last night she won`t tick over ..

if i rev her she will start but only will run if i keep my foot on the accelerator and keep the revs up to about 3 to thousands rpm . when i take my foot off the pedal she cuts out . ... i taught it might be dirty petrol so i went with a can and got 5 euros from another garage but i`m still having the same trouble .
battery is fine . all lights are working but she won`t tock over unless i rev the be jaysus out of her ? ..

    any suggestions ....

    :(

If it is dirty petrol you will have to clean out any filters and possibly the carbs before the clean petrol will make a difference.

If its a 1991 car its early for a 2.2. Are you sure its not a 2.3?

Check basics on those yokes. Plugs, leads and distributor. Remove the cap to check for moisture, or corrosion.
Check for vacuum leaks too. There are lots of little pipes around the engine, and under the bonnet generally. Check to see that one of them is not holed, or that the rubber joints on the pipe ends are not cracked/perished. Vacuum is used for the electronic ignition by the way.

As previous poster hinted, a fuel system service may be called for. New fuel filter. Dont worry about the carb tho :D. She's FI.
The fuel pump and fuel pump relay should also be checked, when you first switch on the ignition, but dont crank, the fuel pump should be audible running for a second or two to build up pressure.
The relay can develop cracked soldered joints. Re-flow the joints.......or replace the relay.
Thats the basics....maybe someone else will know more...esp if it is the 2.2 engine.
