There was a thread similar to this in July 2009 but it focused on the FE1s and therefore all aspects of criminal, company, constitutional etc law. Just in relation to criminal law what books would you recommend perhaps under the headings of road traffic law, case law and statute law etc.
Do any of you rate the Garda guide (so expensive!!) at all?
Where is the best place to browse these books or are they all internet purchases?

Well there are a number of pretty good criminal books. I don't know anything about the Garda Guide at all, apart from what a few Garda friends of mine say about it! :)

The best book is probably Professor Tom O'Malley's book. It is recently updated and indeed right on the money. It is called the Criminal Process. Not sure if you can browse it but worth the cash if going to buy. Charleton, McDermott and Bolger (is dated) but also very good.

In terms of brief guides, McMullen and McIntyre's Criminal Law Essential Legal Text - ELT, is good. Relatively reasonable also. For exam study there are 21 Euro books called Nutshells and Nutcases, these are also kept up to date and might give you the insight you need without having to remortgage the house! In fact there is a new short book called Criminal Law by Sarah Carew which is part of the exam focus series. It is not a bad little book.

In terms of the Evidence elements, Ross Gorman has a Nutshell also on that. It is not bad either. In terms of the main texts for evidence: Declan McGrath, John Healy or some of the UK publications - Though there are some differences to be aware of.

In terms of Drink Driving. Mark DeBlacam has a book out, again slightly dated but it is very good.

Go to Hodges Figgis. Third floor, top of stairs on left. Legal section is there.

    Tom

For Road Traffic information, I would recommend Woods' book.

Guide to Road Traffic Offences - James V Woods
