bofore i say anything can i just say that no disrespect is intended in this post but i'm just really curious in relation to the law in this instance!
driving on motorway today in left lane (slow lane as such) doing 120 (max speed allowed) when i noticed the cars ahead were all breaking one after another! indicated right and pulled out into fast lane to see what might be ahead only to discover that a herse (sp) was driving along at app' 40kph!!
is this legal? ( for the record, once i knew what the hold up was i waited and went back into left lane out of respect! but.....on a motorway??? surely this is a hazzard! what says ye?

40km/h is not legal on an unobstructed motorway.

It is tradition in the UK for hearses to do full speed (they are well capable of 70mph) on motorways and only crawl on normal roads. This must not have come across here... and I'd have blasted past them; its not the same as overtaking one on a single carriageway now is it!

Has to be doing over 50km/h

Passed a hearse & it's congration on the M7 today outside Kildare town.
I was doing about 120 km/h, the hearse was going about 80-100 km/h. Can't see why they all wouldn't travel like this.

I did however come across a Tractor (with trailer) on the same section of motorwayon Wednesday. Madness....total madness

& no it wasn't one of those big huge supertrax machines!

Just call Trafficwatch and report them.

That kind of driving is just dangerous. No need for anyone else to get killed thanks to the transport of someone who's already dead.

I passed a hearse on the M6 a few weeks back. Couldnt believe what i was seeing at first. Intially i was thinking sh*t what will i do but then i said feck it & overtook. Personally i think it's disgracefull & potentially very dangerous they would go on the motorway. are we all supposed to hang back out of respect?!

Im as bad as any when it comes to moaning about our roads and bad driving, trust me. But, ffs, are you in that much of a hurry, or be honest, was it that much of an inconvenience? What is this world becoming..

Piety and respect for the dead in all honour ...but a funeral cortege on a motorway doing 40 km/h is a hazard and could possibly cause an accident.

Hearses (and the limos that go with it) have engines and gearboxes like any other car and while I don't see the need to ferry the dead to their grave at intergalactic speeds ...at least keep up with the trucks and don't cause a tailback ...else stay off the feckin' motorway

Being driven in a hearse is one last chance for people to hold up traffic one last time.

There's no legitimate reason for them to be on a motorway doing 40kph, there's always going to be another route.

Typical mentality towards religion though, if it was some religion that the catholic church deemed to be ridiculous, i'm sure the gardaí would have sent all available units to stop them.

Ah yea, blame the catholic church for everything, typical atheist lamenting about how great everything would be if religion didnt exist and teenage rebelling against everything thats traditional and irish.

If its so bad here just move to Sweden or San Francisco and use their iPhone app to automatically report drivers you dont approve of

    Yeah, good one! ...or something.

I presume you're waiting for a response, to make your argument as to why hearses should be allowed hold up traffic, more dramatic.

Maybe the recession hit them hard & they are cruising for business? :(

Probably 10 years ago at this stage but not all hearses travel slowly on motorways. I was overtaken by one on the Glanmire bypass heading towards Cork City & he was close to losing his tail end as must have been doing close to 90mph. Caught me off guard so couldn't get close enough to see if had a passenger in the back ;)

Unfortunately neither of these statements are true. The law merely requires that a vehicle on a motorway must be capable of driving at 50km/h, not that it must actually achieve that speed. It's a small difference in wording but has a huge effect on the interpretation.

Hearses have a 'lower deck', so not seeing a coffin does not mean there's none on board.
