Do people use Knoppix as a main distro or is it mainly for temporary/recovery purposes?

I used to have Puppy on a USB to repair my system if things went wrong (as I recall, trying to update KDE kept deleting Grub).

Recovery mostly. Friends Windows PC's constantly crashing because they dont really know how to protect their computer.

Id always recommend Unix ( Solaris 10 ), but you really need to know what you are doing. Linuxs' UI is faar more user friendly and the best place to start. ubuntu or Mint Id recommend.

And, yes I find them MUCH better than Windows. Windows really needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

That and the fact Linux / Solaris is free, whereas Windows is... ??

You can run certain Windows programs with Wine. However, it can take some fiddling to get some programs to run !

And if all else fails. Just install Virtualbox and run Windows + your app in there !
    :D
