Women-only train carriages launched

No, not here but in Indonesia :D

My initial reaction was more Islamic influence but having read through it appear that men's inability to be polite in public is more to blame :o (duurty pervs) and religion has little or nothing to do with it. Interesting question and I suppose you can still travel in other carriages if with your husband or kids or friends if you want.

So, would it work over here? Is it good thinking or backwards nonesense or PCism gone mad? Do you want pink and blue DARTs :D

    Link
A commuter train with two women-only carriages has received an enthusiastic welcome after the service was launched in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

Leaning back in a soft, pink-cushioned seat, student Wiwit Wahyuningsih, 19, said: "Especially during morning and evening rush hours, it's very common to be harassed or touched by men, intentional or not."

Indonesia, a secular nation home to the world's largest Muslim population, is often held up as a beacon of modernity. Women wearing headscarves can be seen walking alongside friends in shorts in glitzy shopping malls.

But the state-run train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia decided to set aside two cars in an eight-coach commuter train that runs between the capital and suburbs after being flooded by letters of complaint from women.

"We need to protect them," said Makmur Syaheran, a spokesman for the company, adding that if the service is a success, it could eventually be expanded to other trains.

Women packed into the train, quickly filling up the 58 seats in each of the two male-free cars.

Asmawati, an acupuncturist, said she was impressed.

"It feels so relaxed, I love it," said the 41-year-old. "Clean, air conditioned, no one bothers you ... I hope they keep it up."

Indonesia is not the first Asian country to offer same-sex carriages. Neighbouring Malaysia recently reserved several pink coaches for women. Japan has offered the service during morning rush hour for years. And in India, female passengers have entire trains to themselves.

I'd vote for an under 25 only carraige. With locked doors both ends.

I was gonna say I'll bring my strobe light but most IE trains I've been on had no sockets.

They're very common in Japan, even on the Tokyo Subway, and in many other countries.

Can anyone imagine the uproar if there were male-only carriages? :D

When I first read the thread title I thought this was some bizarre response to Larry Murphy getting the train last week...

What about a kids and their parents only carriage??

Still wrong, that just means you wouldn't be able to go into their carriage but they could come into yours, you want an "adults only" carriage so that kids can't come into it. Think of it like no smoking, what the OP posted is essentially a "no men" carriage.

what about a no kids carriage?

So for an 8 carriage DART, lets see

    under 25 only
    over 25 only
    male only
    female only
    family only
    no kids allowed
    OAPs only
    normal carriage for all

The Swiss have them. Lovely. Especially when you're travelling with your own family :D

Its unfortunate that these things have to happen. If they do have to happen, they need to ensure that there is parity of provision.

Several of the new urban rail systems in the Middle East will also have such carriages, indeed some will also have first class. Air conditioning of course is a must when its 50 degrees outside.

    Constructive posts only please.
We're short enough on carriages, we can't go burning them.

They have wimmen-only carriages too in Dubai (surprise surprise) on the new metro. But they're optional like. It's really annoying when the rest of the carriages are packed and the women's carriage has about four burka-clad-babes with their pick of seats. Surprisingly, it seems that very little Western women opt for the carriage.

They have them on the UK services. No phones, music players, etc. Of course there's always some twat who'll decide to have a phone conversation, but they can be asked to knock it off.

How about entire trains for travel card users only - they have five a day already running from Ennis to Athenry, called the WRC SJE.
