Soot Box

    Folks

I'm installing a solid fuel range in my new build. This will need a soot box in the chimney.

I want to tile the splashback of the range but don't want to have to leave an opening for the soot box in the middle of the tiles.
Would it be possible to access to the soot box from outside as opposed to the kitchen for cleaning etc or could this cause problems?

    Thanks
    John

Where did the notion of putting it above the range come from?

    from here
    http://www.waterfordstanley.com/SiteImages/Site_131/PDF/oilstoves.pdf

A soot collection box should be fitted below the
lowest point of the flue system, so as to prevent
the build-up of soot from inhibiting the flow of
the flue gas products from the stove. The collection
box should be fitted with a cleaning door
that is accessible behind the stove during servicing.

I include this as an example.

The normal set up is that the flue from the range will enter the chimney say 1.6m above FFL via a 45 degree downward facing junction or similar.

The flue will continue down below this junction and it is in this section that the soot box is fitted.

The flue is swept through the stove or some other access point and the soot falls down the flue and is collected via the soot box.

In most cases the flue is too narrow to allow sweeping from the soot box.

To answer ur question, it would be okay outside but below IMO.
