How well does the SU4100 cpu perform?

    Hi all,

I'm buying a new laptop, previously I had a Samsung NC20 12" netbook, it was grand for what I needed (browsing web, emails, msn etc..).. well it was almost grand, really the CPU underperformed, it struggled at multitasking, if i had several tabs open and especially playing a youtube/flash video it would jump to 100% cpu usage and start to choke...

anyway I broke the screen on that and i couldn't be bothered fixing it - so i'm going to buy a new one, i'm aiming for 500 - 600 kind cost.

I have my eye on an Acer Aspire 5741 from laptopsdirect, i3 processor, thats fine... but then I saw this, HP Pavilion dm3-1030ed. It looks ideal for what I want, something small and light, and is grand for lounging about with while watching tv (don't need a laptop for gaming, i have a PC for that).

So I just want to know if the Intel SU4100 cpu is any good? The Samsung NC20 had a Via Nano ULV U2250 (1.3ghz) cpu which just didn't cut it for me... maybe it was the GPU that sucked though for video decoding, but it could not handle several tabs + youtube at all.

is the SU4100 CPU for me?
    • browsing with several tabs open
    • chatting on msn
    • watching youtube video
    • and maybe possibility of watching a 720p x264 video or an xvid.. not a big deal for that but it would give me an idea what the laptop can and cannot perform
is the SU4100 better than the VIA Nano?

i'm gonna hang onto it for a bit :) not sure what i'm gonna do with it.

if it had a decent cpu/gpu in it that could handle video decoding i'd leave it hooked up to a tv for a multimedia pc... but yeh its not powerful enough :( i need to think what ill do with it, new screens are pricey - more worth my while buying a decent cheap laptop like the one im looking at than spending a good chunk of that money on a slow old laptop thats out of warranty

    Yes on all your Qs
The SU4100 is a nice little CPU.
Can watch 720p vids no prob, and do quite a few other things pretty well.
Just make sure you get one with the GMA4500MHD graphics or better (Nvidia or ATI are usually better).

cool thanks... yep the laptop has a GMA4500MHD.

I've pretty much decided on this laptop - only thing now is it's from Komplett.. i've bought loads of stuff from them in the past no bother, but it seems they were bought out some months ago and the new owners are rubbish... loads of complaints on the komplett board that people are not getting their money back on things they returned and are having to go to the small claims court over it... so yeh... :S

    nuts :-/

IMHO - avoid komplett right now.
I've had issues recently where something was in stock on the website, after 2 weeks nothing was moving - got told they were on back order, yet site still said in stock to order. Eventually cancelled, they only part refunded and then eventually got my money back.
Unfortunately the lads here and on twitter bear the brunt of it - they are trying, but it's just not worth the hassle.

Might be worth asking them over in the komplett forum that if you order it, is it truly in stock.

yeh i'll do that... also i think i'll go to their pick up point and pay for it there rather than online, i've heard nightmares of people being charged for items they aren't getting and others who are charged double and have to wait for a refund

i can't believe they'd f***d up such a good site... i've built 3 computers from parts i bought from komplett, and bought a tv and ps3 from there too... they used to be great, such a shame as in Ireland we aren't spoiled for decent sites with good prices on computer hardware :-\
