The Lake District or similar places

Has anyone been to the Lake District recently? I was thinking of going in September with my boyfriend for a very well earned break. Haven't done too much research but I've looked at a few cottages/B&B's and they all seem quite expensive. We can't spend more than about 250 quid between us for 2-3 nights. I would also be up for considering anywhere similar, where you can just go and chill, go for walks, snuggle up in the evenings with a hot cocoa or a quiet pint, that kind of thing. We live in London so perhaps the Cotswolds might make more sense, or somewhere in Wales? Or even Devon/Cornwall. Just anywhere where we might get some peace and quiet that isn't London! Any recommendations?

My husband and I were in the Lake District in April. I had been for day trips very often when I was a child (15+ years ago) but my husband had never been. We had been due to go to Barcelona but had to change our plans at the last minute due to the ash cloud. I have to say that it was a blessing in disguise, we had an amazing time!

We stayed in Keswick, which is the most gorgeous chocolate box town. It has loads of great pubs, restaurants and amazing little craft and speciality shops. It is situated on the edge of Derwentwater which is a stunning body of water. There are walks for all skill and fitness levels (the walk around the lake is totally flat) but it is worth pushing yourself a bit and climbing a peak or two. The views are so worth the effort expended. We alternated days of walking with days just spent pooching about, looking in shops, stopping for a pint etc. We stayed in a B&B which was fine for a few days, but if you were staying a bit longer, I would recommend self catering to give yourself a bit more space. However, if you are only staying

2 or 3 nights, then a B&B is fine. They run about £65-70 per night so should be well within your budget. We stayed in a B&B on a street called Stanger Street, it was so convenient, literally a one minute walk from the centre. Our B&B was called Ellergil.

Ambleside is another nice village, but I think there is more to do and see in Kesick. If you have a car, you are only 10-20 mins drive between towns

I'm sure the Cotswolds and Cornwall are beautiful too, but there is something so rugged and stunning about the Lake District, we can't wait to go back.

Also, if you have a dog, it is the most dog friendly place I have ever been! Not only are dogs welcomed in pubs, shops and restaurants, they actually leave food and water out for them. Great spot for dog lovers!

The New Forest would be a nice alternative,

    Wikipedia on New Forest

    Or the Peak District

    Wikipedia Link for Peak District

In fact there is a lot of choice for alternatives in England and Wales HERE
