If you are putting up a VHF aerial & a UHF aerial pointed to the one transmitter site, does that mean that your Tv must have a VHF tuner.

Maybe this is a silly question or do all tv have VHF tuner. I know that eventually all the channels will be UHF digital but for now I need VHF for rte.

This is a job I'm doin for family member(why do I get into these things????)

    Thanks

yes the tv needs to have a vhf tuner.

if the tv was bought in Ireland then it should have one.

What make and model number is it?

not sure at the minute, it's a fairly new Sony or LG I think. It's a fairly big 42" I think. It has digital tuner but nor MPEG4.

Do you reckon it would have VHF, how can I tell by looking at it or it's on screen menus?

Probably the quickest and simplest way is to do an autoscan and see what the telly decides to pick up. It's possible you'll have to set the TV's location to IReland first. If it scans between e.g. 45 to 870 MHz (Ch 01 - Ch 69) then it covers VHF, if it scans 471 to 860 MHz (Ch 21 - 69) only then it probably doesn't.

So if I wanted to get the 4 irish channels in and around the Craughwell/Loughrea area I'd use a VHF and a UHF C/D both pointed to Maghera???

As far as I know, one goes to Maghera for RTE and the other goes towards Loughrea for TV3/TG4.

I would bring the telly back to whatever cowboy sold it to you without mpeg4. Maghera is in the direction of Kilchreest but 'Loughrea' is to get its own DTT transmitter some time in 2012 maybe.

To answer your "silly" question. All TV's sold anywhere in the world except the UK have VHF tuners. This is because everywhere except the UK (and HK) uses VHF. These days manufacturers are realising the folly of making UHF only sets (UHF tuners cost more than multiband due to the savings of mass production) so most but not all UK sets are multiband.

If your set is a grey import it may well not have a VHF tuner.
LG sets in the UK have VHF tuners. Late Sony sets do though you may have to set non UK mode for it to work.
