Sky Phone connection is choking my broadband

I've been having serious issues with my broadband lately. I should be getting 3MB download speed, but it has been consistently at 0.75 MB.

I was on the phone with technical support, and we eventually tracked the problem down to the Sky Phone line connection. When I take the phone line out of the back of the Sky box, my internet download speed jumps up to just under 3MB.

From reading this section of Boards, it seems that the main purpose of the phone line is for multi-room - to check the boxes are in the same house. I used to have multi-room but canceled it last year, so this is no longer an issue for me. However is there any other functionality I will lose by not having my Sky+ box connected to the phone line. For example I use remote record, will this no longer work?

Only thing you will lose is box office ordering and you can always plug your phone back in whan you want this. Is there a dsl filter on the line going to the sky box?

Edit: sorry just saw your remote record comment but dont think this uses the phoneline.

sounds like you need to put a filter on the line going to the sky box.

You dont need the phone line connected,

not sure about the remote record stuff though,

No DSL Filter. The Sky engineer, had it hard wired into the phone socket. I'd have to get my screwdriver out to remove it from the wall socket.

Just plug a dsl filter in to back of the sky box

Remote record works fine without the phone line connected. You only need the phone line initially to register for remote record. Once that is done whip out the phone and off ya go.

The back of the box is the best option in this case. easy in line.

I had a similar prob, with 3 Sky boxes installed, my 7.6mb Eircom was useless , with drop outs every few minutes, until I arranged for an engineer to come out 2 weeks ago, to do a 'tech install' for €70 ish, he split up the main line so that I have a new phone socket for dsl only, and another socket for sky/phone. Now my line is flying no drop outs or reduced connection.

Could be worth a call to your provider, ie eircom etc.

That's pretty dire installation standards! Nothing should be hardwired to a phone line like that.

Some of these guys are total cowboys.

Plug the end of the filter that you would usually plug into the phone socket into the back of the sky box and plug the cable into that.
