iPhone 4 Unlock: US vs European Version ?

I'll be heading to the States in 3 weeks and while over there one of my friends wants to purchase an iPhone 4. I've told him that it shouldn't be a problem unlocking it once it is iOS 4.0.1 (currently). But he said "i was on the apple.com/forum and it says the usa iphone cnt be unlocked to work in europe. the european version can be easy unlockd but not the US version?".

Could someone please confirm that there is no difference unlocking the US Version over the European Version, to put my friends mind at rest.

    Thank you :)

No, there's no difference in the unlock. However, you cannot buy an iPhone in the US outside of a contract. You can in Europe - and you can buy it factory unlocked in Europe.

The cheapest contract in the US is $54/month and it's two years long. You'll also have difficulty getting credit scored if you're only there for a few weeks.

There is no difference. Firmware is rolled out worldwide, so that would be the same. Only issue would be you cant unlock it for verizon or something, as they use a different type of network. (cdma?)
