I've a win 7 64 bit machine with 1000 GB's of a hard drive, and while its not even a quarter full I've noticed that my system has slowed down alot since I first got it about a year ago.

I noticed this mostly when powering it up...takes alot longer to start up than it used to.

Can some of ye experts on the subject give me a few pointers as to what I could do that would get it running a little more quicker/smoothly?

    Appreciate any help,

    Thanks :pac:

The following 2 apps will get you started,

ccleaner - Clean cache and registry.
auslogics disk defrag - Better defrag than native win with a gui to see whats happening to your disk.

Also turn off any unneccesary applicataions from startup = msconfig > startup

And uninstall anything you don't need.

I'm typing this from a linux box, so cannot check it's full path.

Scan for malware with malware anti bytes.

    Use chrome as your browser.

ccleaner will also do the msconfig thing: you just go into Tools>Startup and Disable whatever you dont need in the first 45 seconds of your PCs' startup :p

also in Auslogics, theres an Arrow on the defrag button: click into that and select Defrag and Optimize. Given it probably hasn't been defragged ever, dont be shy to run this a few times over the next couple days. CCleaner's registry scanner should be given 3 passes when you first use it also. For some reason I find it never gets absolutely everything on the first go; and the 3rd just checks that it got everything else on the 2nd. Very quick though.

First off, all versions of Windows slow down over time. Think of a car engine which doesn't run well after years of use...wear and tear, dirty filters, sludgy oil etc etc.

As mentioned in other replies, ccleaner is a good starting point, especially the startup program cleanup. Too many icons beside the clock won't do you any favours for performance. You can delete the likes of updaters, toolbars and so on. If you're not sure, list the start up items here and we'll tell you which to dump.

Another area to look at is, turn off all windows 7 themes and fancy "eye candy" as it's called. This "bloat" can add to a drop of performance. Goto control panel & under appearance & personalisation...., select "change theme" to classic.

Also try this, right click "my computer" --> properties --> down the left hand side, click "advanced system settings" from the popup screen, choose advanced tab and click settings button under performance section. Choose "adjust for best performance" option [apply(s) & ok(s)]

Do you know how much RAM is installed in your computer? Although Win7 is supposed to be lighter on resources, the proof is in the eating. If you have 1GB of RAM, it will work "ok" when the computer is new, but over time the gradual windows slow down and the 1GB won't help. 2GB would be an improvement & 4GB would be excellent. Of course, running 64bit can address more RAM but is limited to your motherboard spec.

All the above will help to improve performance. Out of interest, do you have antivirus sw installed and which do you use? I once heard that after uninstalling McAfee AV, the difference in how windows ran was night and day...no more sluggish performance!

    Good luck

    all the above ^^

windows os shouldnt slow down if well looked after...

i havent reinstalled os in half a year and still working as good as then :)

perform usual clean ups, defrag, adjust your start up programs and should be fine :)

i use advance system care :)

does all the work for you in one click ;)

start -> run -> type: msconfig -> startup -> disable most/all items. Check the services tab too, and hunt for services you don't need. Background services can chew up alot of RAM.

Ive been running Tune Up Utilities, handy little all in one program that does pretty much everything I need for Win 7 (it made my life better with Vista so I gave it a go on 7) and its great, its a handy one click process of things for startups, programs, defragging, all the usual titbits you need doing on your machine....

Give the trial a go :
