Why not just download the song as an MP3 using a site like

    http://www.vidtomp3.com/

The site isn't youtube. Its another site called football chants. i'm editing the audio from it. It won't allow me to download plus i would rather use audacity so that i can get it as Wav or aiff

I use an audio jack and plug it from the output to the input. Then you have to change your settings to record from the input connection rather than the microphone. I have a mac so I have to go to Preferences - Devices and change the recording to Built-in-Input so you'll have to find the windows equivalent of that.

Press ctrl+P to bring up the preferences for audacity.

I don't remember exactly what the screen looks like, but you want to change your input device to something like "stereo mix" or something.

    Click Record.

    Play the video/ audio.

    Et voila.

The ability to record the output is dependant on your sound card and drivers. In my opinion more so the card.

As i upgraded computers i gradually lost the ability to record the output of the computer.

I can now only do it by using a special loop back feature on my recording interface.

The jack connecting the headphone out to the line in is your only solution.

I have read that it has something to do with pressure about copyright to stop exactly what you are trying to do. Not sure how much truth is in this though.

    Thanks for the reply.

Its a bit stupid. I edit and sometimes have reasons for wanting to record of cds or dvds or raw footage

On the Mac there is an application called Audio Hijack Pro which allows recording streams or any audio regardless of its source including what the OP wished to do.

Did a quick search for a Windows equivalent and came up with this:

    Total Recorder.

    Hope it helps !!
