I'm using Acrobits softphone on the iPhone, it works really well. I saw they now have a g.729 Annex A codec available. Has anyone tried this over 3G or EDGE? In my office I can only get an EDGE signal so I need to be sure it works. Anyone tried it or any G.729 codec?

You should definitely try it if it's an option. I think it's by far the best codec for VoIP on the Internet.

I've used that codec on a 512kbps fixed wireless service and quality wasn't great, the connection usually got pings within 60ms to places like boards etc, but when the contention set in( like it does on edge) the quaility was unusable

In fairness I doubt that the problem there was specifically to do with the G729 codec. If the bandwidth quality isn't great then any codec will suffer but G729 will suffer less than most.

I'd be interested to know too.
G729 would enable to save on bandwidth big time, so for all smartphone users that not on unlimited Internet plans, it could be useful.

A potential downside can be the energy : g729 requires decryption (hence extra processing power) on the handset, so that may hit the battery a bit too much.

    Definitely worth a try though.

Yeah, it's €7.99 though. I'm not adverse to paying it, I just don't want to pay it and turn out it's no better.

I've used it with a VoIP app on Nokia phones and while it generally worked and the bandwidth was mostly fine the latency (delay) could sometimes be an issue.

Did you use it over EDGE or 3G?

UPDATE: I bought the codec. My girlfriend used it to call Canada over 3G and apparently the quality was excellent, any bit as good as any other phone.
