The Golf was never available as a van in the UK afaik. Most car vans actually came into the country as passenger cars and had their windows, rear seats removed and seat belt harnesses welded.

Car derived commerical vans are not charged at 50 euro vrt flat rate, they're charged at 13% (figure could be a bit off) of market value.

Thats correct. Wheel base must be a certain length such as a Landcruiser etc. OP just buy a 3 door Golf and convert it. Its simple.

Its to do with weight too.

All car derivied vans are catagory B vehicles, which mean the qualify for 13.5% VRT. Certain crew cabs like the L200 are the same. Bigger stuff like Navaras and Landcruisers are 50 quid to VRT.

Most car vans started life as a proper car in Ireland, and were converted by the distributor. They were never a big seller in the UK, because its just as cheap to buy a proper car (no VRT).

I might be buying something similar soon also. Golf vans are too expensive here, no difference between car and van version prices. UK prices are more realistic so you might get a 3dr, convert it, pay vrt and still save a bit. Plus, the spec will be higher.
