Can anybody advise the best place for the transfer of a betamax video recording to a dvd. The video itself is only 25 minutes long or so. And is it going to be really expensive?

You may need something along the lines of this http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/betamaxhd.html

I bet it would be actually cheaper then getting it done professionally, that website is from the US so different voltages apply but you should be able to find a similar model suitable for use in Ireland.

    Good luck.

There are places in Dublin like Specialist AV - http://www.specialistav.ie/ - that would probably do it but they might charge more than buying a device yourself.

Can't hurt to check with them before you purchase anything yourself though.
