High Altitude Trekking and Insurance

Quick question for any trekkers here.

Am on a round the world trip, using an old insurance policy. thing is I am going to Nepal and it only covers up to 2,000 metres. I will do some high altitude trekking to Either Everest Base Camp or Annapurna. As I see it I have a few options as im defo doing the trek

-pay€30 to get insured up to 4000 metres (will be above this for 6-7 on EBC ,2 on Annapurna)

-Pay €100 to cover to 6,000 metres

-Get another trekking policy just for this sections (any recommendations)

-Dont bother and hope for the best.

What would people recommend i do? €100 is'nt a huge expense but the insurance policy has already been incredibly expensive (long story) and I don't want to give the USIT F***ers any more money

I take it you've already bought the insurance policy? If so, could you cancel it? €100 to cover up to 6,000m is really taking the piss

EDIT: I was covered with Ace Travel Insurance and unless the policy has changed, the basic one covers high altitude trekking. Have a look here: http://www.aceinsure.ie/travel/premium.asp?region=world&who=you. Even if you book with them for an entire 30 days, it's only €26. I reckon that could be your best bet.

Problem is most insurers won't let you start a policy after you've left Ireland. He/she is already abroad if I'm reading the first post correctly.

Ah yes I hadn't spotted that. In that case, option (b) seems like the only sensible one to me which is regrettable.

Thanks for the replies. I have not left Ireland yet and will not for another few weeks. i will be away for the year but only high altitude trekking for 2-3 weeks. Nonethless I am required to purchase this for a year from my existing policy.

Do people think it is absolutley vital to have this for high altitude trekking?

Shoudl I go with usit which will be about €100 for the year?

Should i try find an alternative ccmpany to insure me for these 3 weeks,I have contacted ACE to get a quote.

    Thanks for any help.

Just get the insurance from ACE for the month or so you're in Nepal; it's only 25% of what USIT are asking for. You can do it on their site in minutes.

Like with anything else, the insurance is not 100% necessary but picture this: You're at 5,000m deep in the Himalayas, 10 day's walk from the nearest road - wouldn't you like the peace of mind of the insurance?

Check the T & Cs carefully. I'm pretty sure you can't take out insurance for a portion of a longer trip.
